I don't think free directories will get you to PR5.

Bear in mind, most free directories with any volume have thousands and thousands of listings. You're free listings is likely to land way back on the pages for the category, meaning search engines may never even crawl that far to find it, and that last page is almost guaranteed a PR of 0.

To build raw backlinks, free directories are OK (provided the search engines find your links), but I don't think you'll likely to get any direct PR benefit.

Submit your site in directories, either free or paid.
Do link exchanges with other related sites.

not real sure about free...but spending a little cash on a paid directory will not be all bad...that will help you build PR quick, which in turn you might could sell links for and make back your cash...

Submit to high PR directories with similar content. The page on which your link is placed should not have many links say 40.

How about paying for a link on a PR6/7 site? This would probably help a little bit.

The best way of course is to keep generating quality backlinks. Remember that Google is trying to get the best experience for the user. Try thinking in those terms. If your site provides freshly updated content along the keyword lines that people are searching for, then your PR will slowly increase as you gather good backlinks.

    Am I right about this?

I've heard that many times. However, we have had a dmoz listing for over a year now, and we are still a PR4. Seomoz's page strength tool gives us a 5.5, so I hope it's going to happen this next update :D

You do more submission for your site in high PR sites. But be sure you submit your link on relative site and perticular category.

here are a few methods to get to pr5 for free!

start free directory submission, do it slowly and constantly!

write an article and submit it to the article submission sites, include your site's url in it.

link excahange is a nice and free way to get a lot of links!!

add unique content, and keep them fresh, keep adding contents as quick as you can.

make proper navigation, close all open tags. make proper meta tags, these things are also very important.

traffic is important, so optimize your keywords, that will help.

try blog comments, forum signature, etc, these are free way to get some links. there are a lot of other methods of free links, you can try them, just stay out of the link farms and everything will be fine!:D

DMOZ alone won't get you a PR5. I've been on DMOZ for a long time and am currently a PR4 with 1,000's of inbound links.

There's a lot of wisdom here. Remember your competition can submit to all the same free directories; you need more than that to stand out.
