Can't legally keep a raccoon in Michigan without a wildlife permit. He looks about a week old so I'm bottle feeding him while we find a wildlife rehab willing to take him in. So far the closest I've found is a 2 hour drive but I need to call the DNR to make sure it's ok to transport him. I've been advised to euthanize him but I can't do it. It's all still up in the air, trying to make some firm but legal plans. If we can't, I'll have to let animal control euthanize him. :(

There is no nice ending. As much as you go looking for someone good out there to take the animals. they will not do it. I have already been through this problem. They say they will on a web page but that's a different story. I have been there and done that. I have heard all the stories. As cold as it sounds don't let the little fellow suffer and do whats right. I have been the bad guy for many of times to take care of these animals. They don't belong in your house! I am sure I am not making points with anyone but if I was there you would have heard "I will take care of them". They will make a mess of a home and an attic in Michigan. I hope the best for you and my prayers are with you to do the right thing there is no easy decision here.

I would not say that. what could happen is someone else has a problem catches them and moves them down the road. And it is possible that someone else will wind up with the problem.

Well if only we let the poor animals live in harmony and were not so selfish in cutting down trees and forests, i think such issues would not even pop up.

Well if everything else fails put him in a box with air holes and enough food for a month and ship him to me. I can keep him at my weekend cottage, since there is forest all around he/she will be able to leave once it grows up and until then he/she can play with Fat dormouse, plenty of these around and inside the cottage taking a winter nap. :D

This momma raccoon went to animal control so she won't cause anymore problems. The baby was too young, we tried to help him but he died. :(

Now we just need to do all the clean up worked that Dan told me about. Not looking forward to that job at all but ya gotta do the right thing.

Aah i feel so sad that the baby died, maybe thats why racoon was not trying to get trapped, you should have let the racoon go back to its baby, aah poor guys, a family destroyed :(...

Paidhosting, I feel the same as you do but Dan is right. I love animals and really wish we could have had a happy ending but there's no way we can let them live in the attic. They can carry disease. They don't go outside to do their business, if you know what I mean, so you end up having to deal with the excrement. They chew and do a lot of damage, they can expose wiring and can cause a house fire. The risk of leaving them is just too great.

One thing I did learn. If it happens again I won't try to take care of it myself, I'll call a professional right away.

Dan, you do a difficult job. You have my respect. ;)

For a second i thought u posted in wrong thread or were offtopic but realized it was us offtopic, and talking about annies racoon:D .

Yes annie i understand what u mean but if only u had been more careful with the baby... like taken it to a vet or something.. i am  at u for not taking care of the baby.. what if the moma finds out about it, when things like this happen i think from animals prespective cause they got feelings too.. imagine what the moma must be feeling right now, separated from her new born baby..:(

    Edit : No Cheers

Trust me, I could not have been more careful with that baby. I called many vets, none would see him and they ALL recommended euthanization. I called every wildlife rehabilitator within a 2 mile drive, none would take it in, some gave me advice, some recommended euthanization. I bought the little bottles and the milk replacement formula and bottle fed him night and day while looking for help for the little critter but it wasn't meant to be. I called the DNR and left a message, they never got back to me.

What more could I do? You don't have to like it, I don't like it either, but I know I did everything I could. :(

I blame all the marina's and homes that they've built in my area in the last decade. With the development these animals are left homeless, it's tragic but I can't change what I don't control.
