I want to know how I should go about SEOing my homepage. I'm in the process of setting up a basic niche site, with a bunch of keyword-focused articles linked to from the homepage. The keywords don't all have a 'common keyword' per say, but they are all certainly related. What keyword do I optimize the homepage for? The one with the highest traffic/least competition? The most general one? Any tips appreciated!
I'd go for keyword that will give me the highest chance of visibility. It may not be often used but the competition is low. Usually homepages are a consolidation of the whole theme of the site. So I would bet on summarizing the important services/products/features/differentiators found within your site.
Try to enumerate the topics in your homepage and pick your targeted keywords that best describe your site. Can you tell us what is the main topic of your site?
i would go for choosing keywords which have more count and less competition for short term. And would go for keywords which have quite good count and more competition for long term.
If you want, check your keywords in inventory[dot]overture[dot]com to know the importance of the keyword and to determine the competitors, search it in Google.
