Named as 'The Lion City', it is also known as 'The Fine City'. Cause you have to wory for what you do, or else, you'll be fine by a 'fine man'. Shopping season peaks during late May to end of July every year. You'll find many exported, quality brand products that never been priced before during this seasons. A multi-racial nations that speak in our own version of English, known as Singlish. A 'Kiasu' society as well (a term in Chinese dialect to mean = scare to lose), and this is the 'ugliest' habit majority of Singaporeans have, but for some reasons, everyone benefits by becoming 'kiasu'. No waves to surf, but those idiotic beach boys have for themselves a mini-surfboard to surf with mini-wave. Women and girls here might not be easy to impress, but who knows you might get a chance if you've money that talks! Men and boys here are rather boastful, but very dedicated and hardworking. Crime rate very low, but low crime doesn't mean no crime... Transportation here, I tell you this, even a 7 years old kid can travel alone and manage to arrive home safely. We have just celebrated out 40th anniversary since 1965. What else you want to know?
Yes. It´s true. I was once a gum-runner to Singapore when I snuck some in my suitcase and took it to Singapore to give to friends at an Expo. You´ve never been in a cleaner place in your life. Great food and a interesting mix of people. It´s too squeaky clean for me, Lister, but a great place to visit.
lol .. Im a neighbour of singaporean .. yeah the city is very clean and the transportation is good and crime rate is low .. But i do think that it's a bit bored .. sorry if i offended you
It is a great country, in some ways more modern than Europe in infra-structure while Europe itself being much better than North America. Safe, nice and very educated people and great bargains. While I am all for democracy, nobody can deny that their version of dictatorship (for the people) has achieved a lot.
Chewing gums are banned island wide. But, guess what, if you're a smoker, you can have a legal subscription to chew gums.. (hey! it's not like this 'jingle', "Wringler chewing gums really keep you humming..")
like i said, low crime doesn't mean no crime.. like any other metropolitan city, mobters do exist but they are more 'educated' kind of gangters... dare to operate your illegal activity here? You might get lucky to get away with it!
Once you place your feet in the airport follow by a journey to downtown by a train, we called it Mass Rapid Transit or MRT, you'll realise how Singapore is so much different from the last 5 years. Once I was at the train station and I met an American with his family by accident (might be tourist), stopped me politely and asked, "Excuse me, can you help us to get to Orchard Road?" You know what? Since I was on my way too, I brought him along and show him every single stepped of the way to Orchard Road by MRT. He said this, "Where in the world I am right now?" "I don't believe this is Singapore?" he added. I responded, "I don't believe this is my country either!" He bade goodbye with giggles on our faces...
I have an aunt who moved there 8 years ago, and she loves it. I guess it works for some and not for others. Personally I need more freedom.... Singapore isn't all fun and games, and the most famous thing I can think of the country for is the caning punishment... http://uselessjunk.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2280
It's interesting to know that there is a place on the planet that's harder to get gums than finding a prostitute. Gotta keep it clean, I guess. I actually think that strict law enforcement is a good thing, as long as the laws are reasonable. Taiwan have some lousy cops that spent more time picturing speeding vehicles' plates than stopping abusive parents beating their kids to bits than, obviously, die. Singapore is awesome in comparison. Kudos.
It's just a tiny drop when you see it on the map but I'm so impressed on how this country managed to have a stable economy. This is definitely one of the place I want to visit someday.
i've been there when i was a little kid, but i can't remember a thing now. all i have are memories from the ppics we took there.. i remember riding a tok-tok? is it in singapore? or thailand? can't remember anymore. sigh.
