Do professional SEO's just build back links and optimize the pages of your site? Also why is there fee so high?

That's pretty much it, but there is a lot of territory in those few words.

SEO's may also perform related services such as helping design your site for maximum conversions or helping you market your site through means other than search engines.

For an understanding of how prices are set, read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supply_and_demand

SEO do everything that can give more benefit to the site that he/she optimized. SEO can be a designer, an internet marketer, an article writer and etc. that can help the site. But that would still depend on the skills of an SEO if he/she can do everything for the site.

The fee would depend on the SEO skills and the work that he will do for your site.

Is it because some SEO actually do other stuff they'd prefer not to disclose?

The reason their fees are high is because they are professional in that field which needs a lot of self training and constant learning. What these pro’s can do for a website wouldn’t be possible for the amateur or leaning newbies in SEO so it’s fair IMO but at the same time I think they should be reasonable enough.

Knowledge coupled with expertise in an area counts. This is what demands a price tag.

Mason don't just pile stones on top of each other to build homes/offices as you would say. Even that requires lots of knowledge and expertise in errecting buildings else you will end up with The Leaning Tower of Pisa. :D

Professional SEOs does not tell what techniques they are using, they just optimize your site, on-page and off-page. :)

If I found a surefire way to rank for all sorts of keywords... I would keep it hush hush and develop my own network of websites :)

Still, if you feel like doing the grunt work yourself, you can get a long way by searching some days through Google and forums like this. Collect all information and sort it. Does it make sense? If not, ask. After that, develop a strategy and execute it.

    knowledge is power

you might be able to learn everything and a "pro" SEO guy knows but you will have to spend some time sifting through the trash and experimenting

I still think alot of "SEO guys" are scammers and your better off learning yourself though

Also it depends what you call high fees, from what I've seen on this forum, most of them are lowest of the low. You need to ask for references and past clients and you will realise that even SEOs who were somewhat cheap already charge more and guys who lowballing prices are just jokers. People who aren't in USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc. may charge less if they use by hour work model but they still need advertising budget (and it will be the same and not lower)as well except paying for their job:)

If someone posts on a board and you notice alot of their statements help you or make you think AND their price is reasonable then go for it.
