How to proceed with expanding a website

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for some tips on how to expand my website.

I'm running a fairly popular blog (50 000 page views/month; 600 subscribers) about a mobile phone (yes, it's focused only on one model). The domain is something like motorolaxy.com and name of the blog is Motorola XY. Most of the visitors from search engines come on the phrase motorola xy. At the moment it's ranking number 2 on Google for phrase "motorola xy".

I'd like to expand my blog to cover other motorola models too.

What do you think, should I continue on the old domain (with many valuable backlinks PR6 and PR7 from respected blogs) and just change the name of the website to something more general like Motorola Phones?

Or should I create a new domain and start the more general site there from scratch?

A few more information about the blog:

It's only 6 months old. It has PR4 but PR prediction tools predict it PR5 or PR6.

What do you think, how much do common visitors care for the domain name? Is it a turn off if on a domain motorolaxy.com (xy stands for the phone model) they find also information about other motorola models? There are many how-to articles on this blog which can be applied to all motorola models.

I would appreciate any insights from you guys.

P.S. I used motorola only as an example :)

I would buy a separate domain for your new blogs and have all them linked each to other as many people would be interested only in your niche and that would be easier to market your blog. Of course if you think you can compete with your market leaders, then you can go for it, but I think it will require much more resources.

Don't change your current (successful) domain name for it's current content. That would be a bad move from an SEO and branding perspective. Do try and get a more general domain for the same subject to branch out to. And like andriusk says: interlink it with your current domain wherever makes sense. That will be your first source of visitors to your new site, as well as the first source for google to find out about your new site.

Why not get motorolaqz.com and make a new blog about the Motorola QZ model? ;) You could easily link to it from your existing blog and start it off with a relevant backlink, as only the actual model name would differ, brand and theme would be the same. Once that's up and running solidly, expand with a new model and then another one and so on. And while at it, you could simply start a more general cellphone site and link to it from all your single-model blogs.

DamageX, yes that would be ideal but I don't have resources for too many blogs. Still blogging only part time :)

Hire someone to run your existing blog and move on to the next one. ;)

I had a few attempts on that but it didn't really work. It's hard to find someone who can deliver to the readers exactly what they want. I do quite a lot of keyword analysis, collect questions from the comments and then write new articles based on readers feedback.

One of the guys who was interested in writing on the blog usually went quite offtopic while I wanted to keep the blog quite focused.

I might give it another shot though. I know there are some good writers here on the DP forums, I haven't tried it yet.
