Well, first it was kind of a joke ;)

But second NO Search Engine Optimization is not ranking. One helps you get to the other, but I have sites that Rank #1 on Google right now for no other reason than my studly prowess.

    Hmm, interesting

I have always considered them the same thing since the whole point of SEO is to get rankings.

You just proved our point. You optimize to get rankings, but does that mean its going to work? NO... Why do I rank #1 against 2.5million other sites looking to do the same thing? :D see?

Ar eyou saying backlinks arent a part of SEO, your saying SEO is just about on page optimization?

I think backlinks are domain age are a part of SEO as well as trust zones and stuff like that.

Anything you do to affect search engine rankings are SEO imo.:)

Right that's all part of SEO. I've sen sites that have been active since 1996 that I outrank. Now most of my sites are old as well. Most are early 2001, one or two go back to 98. So domain age is a factor, but again that's part of SEO. And SEO gets you to rank, but it does not guarantee it. That's why SEO and ranking is not synonymous (sp?) :)

I think you missed which SEs you are mainly talking about in the original question.

SEO for MSN is very different from Google's in terms of difficulty for an obvious reason; severe competition in Google SERPs.

Also, the difficulty depends on how much competitive the chosen keywords are. If one is ranked top 10 for a less competitive keyword, he/she would think SEO is easy.

If you are talking about Google SEO, buying links dominates the majority of SEO effort. This could easily mean whoever can invest a lot wins the competition. So, rich guys can avoid "difficulty" easily. The majority would always think SEO is hard because we got no money, doing little on-page SEO here and there to see a tiny push :D

SEO is like a hope for those who don't have much money. If you have enough money why bother doing SEO? Either you do SEO to save money or you have already spent thousands of dollars in Adwords, and all other online advertising/marketing methods and now you want to dominate the organic rankings in G SERPs. ;)

Seo is easy to understand. But if you want to rank high with a competitive keyword, it needs patience and hard work.

For some niches, I find it's easy to get rankings. Others, not so.

You have summed it up. Forget about a competitive term unless you have a decent budget would be my advice.
