How valuable are your PHP skills?

I'm currently learning PHP. It seems it's the highest-paid skill out there in terms of web design and development. Do others agree and when you learned PHP, how much did it increase what you were able to earn?

I've been making a living out of my PHP skills alone for the past 4-5 years.
    And I'm happy about it.

    Good luck!

It's quite considerably more valuable than HTML, CSS or JavaScript. The learning curve is also a lot steeper, and it takes a long time to fully master all the intricacies. But it's well worth it.

It's the only thing i know. I taught myself (and i suppose still am) back in 2002, and i've been using it ever since. Infact i use it pretty much every single day. I can't say in monetary terms it's made me loads, probably not more than $500 since i learnt it, but that's only because i've never actually tried...

Some good responses. Commandos, I agree, that's why I'm learning it. The number of CMSs will increase and so will the users. Are people using PHP for companies or freelancing and how successful?

People use it in both companies and freelancing ,

In Companies a lot prefer to use .NET (if they can afford it) , php is still used saw many companies doing Intranet sites based on php , especially when LAMP is available for free .

For the freelancing it depend on how many reference you have , if you have 10 customers that provide you with constant work , you could easily live from your home doing only php work .

I had this same question years ago. I guess if your seeking to be a freelance programmer, you better learn PHP. You will be able to give your clients better pricing.

I learned enough to accomplish my goals. For bigger projects we farm out to freelancers.

I'm not sure I would really agree with this.

When I write a piece of PHP code I generally know what the output is going to look like. When I write some html and dress it up with a little CSS I'm rarely as sure how it will look in internet explorer.

PHP isn't how I earn a living but I have done a few small projects for reasonable compensation. I'm sure if I was working at it full time I would be able to earn a decent living.

It's a good point about having constant clients, you know where you are with them and don't have to constantly fish around for new work.

I'm saying PHP is more valuable, not less. Did you misread my response? Because I don't understand what exactly you are not agreeing with.

I agree with you on it being more valuable just not on the intricacies of PHP taking longer to learn than html/css/javascript.

It may be I just find logic type tasks easier than the art of design.

From my experiences you should search for PHP jobs outside internet marketing community :p In IM php coding is very underpayed. but it's just my opinion :D

Okay, I get you now. Although I was really talking about learning the what of HTML and CSS, finding out which tags go where and so on, rather than the art of applying it well.

PHP is a basic skill for someone who wants to freelance in web dev work. You might try and be a bit more exotic and go Ruby on Rails but that is still a small market.

The amount of PHP server installations is in the millions and many of the big popular websites are written in PHP. It is a good market to be in! Try updating to PHP 5 though for a bit of an easier time- the language is much superior.
