Sitewide, Single Page, and Selling Links

I was surprised to see that a lot of people think that it's better to have a link on just the homepage of a site rather than the whole site. In fact, I've heard a few people claim they went down in SERPS after getting a sitewide link. I would have thought sitewide is better than a single page. What's the deal?

That brings me to a question about selling links. (It's something I've never done, but have considered.) Would a person with a site make more money selling sitewide links or just selling links on the homepage?

I am not the definitive expert on the matter, but I figured a sitewide would be more beneficial as well. Your link would get more exposure, and have many more pages linking to it (some may also rise in PR). In other threads I read, it seems the consensus is to have as many quality links as possible, and that all links help. I doubt a sitewide would affect your rankings... that just seems rather insipid. But who knows, anyone else care to answer this more definitevly?

Incoming links cant hurt you. Otherwise i would have busted all my competitors already by linking to them sitewide from my own site, or even better some other low quality site.

When it comes to my own experience... I think site wide and homepage links are the same.

It is smart to link throughout the site.

i've heard stories of people purchasing sitewide links, and dropping a lot in the search engines as a result. after they dropped the sitewides, they moved back up to where they were.

they claimed google punished them for buying text links, cause G is trying to cut down on link buyers and those trying to "unaturally" manipulate the search engines

What do I believe? I'm not sure. I think that only in rare circumstances does google try to punish link buyers, so sitewide links should be ok. i still practice sitewide link exchange and buying and i've been doing okay

Thanks for the feedback guys. Maybe, the people who report a drop in rankings are also doing other things that could cause it.
