Directory submissions.. waste of time???

So here is a question I have had for a while now.. all these people offering "Manual Directory Submissions to XXX Directories".. are they worth it?

I mean are these directories even looked at by anyone? Does Google place ANY weight for the fact that your link is on one of these directories?

I have submitted some sites to these service, and they have always done all the submissions. And while these services are cheap, are they really worthwhile? I mean does submitting to these directories help at all??

good question.. maybe some top google expert around can answer that..

personally now a days after having created so many websites and been in this for almost 3 years i know just to which directories to submit my sites to...

depending on the quality of my site and niche i can submit to a certain number of directories and easily get any where from 500 to 1000 visits a day coming from these specific directories...

if your just after google indexing and PR that's another whole different game and better let someone else answer that.

    Not really worth it

Just download DigiXMAS, submit your links to 150 semi-automated in 15 minutes and call it a day

it is a toss up...I think directories kinda suck, they are cumbersome to navigate and pointless. Their only purpose is for links...The cost is so small that it cant hurt to get someone to do it I suppose. I had someone do a few hundred for me...eventually they show as backlinks for what that is worth.

Anyway, I think the manual submission is worth it, but the directories are not.

I've been thinking the same thing, I always hit the back button as soon as I realize Im on a directory but then again I never click on ads. Well 999/1000 times.

People do that mainly for backlinks, not for traffic.

like richie said, directories can only be counted for backlinks, dont count for traffic, you wont get much, have a lot of these backlinks, can help with your seo and pr later

pure submission to directories alone can make your site a PR4-5.

As I can see on my directory, most of submission are link from submission services and some link are submitted in wrong category.

if you submit your site to pr8 directories, then google will give you a lot of weight.
even pr6 and pr5 sites are nice. any site with pr3+ can give you quality backlinks.
but then why submit to pr0? because of the potential. they will get high pr someday, and it is easy to get approved in pr0 easily!!
    cheers!:D

My view on this, i started a directory and its a subdomain of my main site, i only ever advertised in realy on DP on a thread or two saying open for submissions or when i did a big update and such.

I then thougth why not and submitted it to a huge amoutn of directorys my self 150 - 200 maybe, i cant remeber lost count lol. Then one day my directory went from PR0 to PR3 , so if your after PR and are after selling things like links or selling the site in the future then it can be worth it, as your site will have back links, it will be on google more and you will have a nice pr to go with it. You also get visitors from it (well i do anyways lol)
