Create new brand or rebrand existing brand?

Ok, right now I'm stuck with a dilemma. I have my old domain that is horrible by all accounts... a hypen in the middle, a .org, etc. and then I have my new domain name that is great, very brandable, easily remembered, perfect for my content, etc.

The only reason why my old domain name is good is because it has been around for over 4 years and has built a name for itself. I want to create a similar site, same resources as the existing site, but with a ton of new features and functionality as well.

Do you think it would be best to rebrand the existing site under the new domain name or to just create the new brand and keep it separate from the old brand.

    Pros and cons?

    Thanks guys

    Hi,

If you can handle the extra development work, I'd vote for developing a second site with different content. Having two different sites promoting the same concept or product just gives you that much more visibility.

It's twice the work, but imagine having two high ranking sites instead of one - you double your presence (and hopefully see a good increase in sales).

    Good luck!

it depends on how much the credibility of that older URL has diminished. If it's in good standing, you should build up on it. It seems to take forever to get a page rank these days, so you're already over that hurdle.

Or you could just move the site over to the new domain and put up permanent redirects. That will tell the search engines to use the new URL and you'll (most likely) keep your rankings/PR. Once the site is fully moved, then modify it to have the new features/etc.

Thats what Im thinking about doing currently. I might just use my current site as a cash cow to fund my new sites development :)
