Would anyone know are .com domains prefered by SEs? When I do search.yahoo, only or mostly .coms appear. I can't remember seeing .info, .biz... on the first page or in first pages. I also can't remember SEs normally resulting in international domains such as .in, .com.au, .us... even though there are plenty of sites in English with those extensions. In example, I just typed in seach.yahoo the word 'prefered' to check if I spelled it right, the first none .com is at 20th a .net, overall in the first 40 results, 36 .coms, 2 .nets, 1 .org, and 1 .fm.
I think if everything is even between a .com and a .net then the .com might rank higher since its the more sought after domain and is more likley to be the actual company site.
Now I tried search.yahoo for 'register a domain', in the first 4 pages only one extension is not .com, a .net at #17. I ask this as my not .com sites are nowhere to be seen in SEs as if they rather disregard them.
Many people do use a .com domain for their sites, because it is the most common one used, and it helps for type in traffic too. Search engines do not give any preference to any domain though, it is probably the terms which you are searching for which give you this result.
For the 3 search.yahoos, statistically .com took up at least 90% of all resulting domains in the first 40 (first 4 pages) as I tried another search for 'get a hosting', all .coms except at 15th .co.uk, 29th .org and 31st .net. 37 .coms out of 40, again over 90% of all domains. It doesn't seem to be a coincidence if averagely .coms come with dominating percentage in the first 40. .infos are nowhere to be seen, no wonder they are 8 times less expensive than .coms at GoDaddy.
Search engine does not give preference to .com domains. There are many high ranking .com domains around simply because there are more registered You can try searching for 'page rank checker' and you will see that the first result is non .com
An .info at #1 for 'page rank checker' !!!!!! still in the first 40th, 11 none .coms, .coms take up 73%.
i agree with KC TAN. the reason why most of the high-ranking sites are .com is because they were the 1st batch of domains ever released. Then came .net, .org, etc. As a result, .com sites were generally more matured and had more time than the others. at least that's my speculation.....
Generally, can a domain extension be prefered over some other!? I had a number of newly registered domains I wanted to see outlet in search.yahoo results. I parked them at domainspa.com, later on, all .coms and .infos were produced in the search results, a .ws did not, as if TLD domains are prefered over international!? A lot of people are asking for advices should they buy international domains like .ws (West Samoa), .sg (South Georgia)... since a lot of good domain names are available. If SEs prefer some extensions over others, than there isn't much use of having a quality international domain name in compare to having averagely-looking TLD name.
You're confused. Lets say you have business.com and business.sg. Now business.com has X amount of backlinks, has been registered since X time, has X amount of content, has X amount of on page optimization, etc. Business.sg is brand new and has none of those abilities. If you registered a .info or .org and a .com at the same time and did the exact same thing it is my belief that they would come out about even. It is what is behind the domain name, and the site that is important, not just the extension.
There is one time where a .com may be a negative and that's geo targeting so a website aimed at uk customers may prefer .co.uk as the domain name appears to be one of the factors that decides if a site is included in country specific searches (it is not however the only factor)
I registered 6 domains at the same time (2 weeks ago), 2 .coms, 3. infos, 1 .ws. As newly registered, they did not appear in search.yahoo. I parked them at domainspa.com. All .coms and .infos appeared in search.yahoo, .ws did not. I don't know why, the procedure with all 6 domains was the same.
Unless someone actually has a decent source on this one its just us running our mouths about what we "think"
For my point of view, there is no diference between a .com and a .us domain when you're talking about search engines. Most people prefer the .com because is more commom and this way its natural that when you make a search on any search engine you'll get a higher % of .com domains.
You may find it easier to get links to your .com then something else since so many spammers are using other top level domains.
