I know wat it means, but why would a person use this "rel="nofollow" " especially on its homepage, just trying to figure out the benefit of it.

    Anybody??

No benefits for the persons url getting the nofollow but good for owner of homepage as it lowers his outbound links when it comes to pr calculations.

So the fewer the outbound links, the higher the PR? but how few is few? Is 1 outbound link few? 5? 10? Just hope to find a good balance for my directories ;)

There is difference in term "PR calculations" and Higher PR. Best bet would be for you to use google.ca and find out what and how their basic pr algorithm works if you are interested in finding a balance.

    cheers

Nope i did not mean it looses pr or gains pr it all depends on how the algo operates and takes into consideration the outbound links from a page.

    Cheers

I would recommend a maximum of 20 outbound links per page.

Same difference as in "doing calculations" and "looking at final result even before looking at the calculations and understanding them". Hmm google.ca is another domain by google.

    cheers

A page does not lose its PR by passing it. It assigns its PR to where it links but does not give it over. Linking externally therefore reduces your 'sites PR' because you are assigning only the remaining part of the pages pr to the other internal pages.

    To the original question:

rel="nofollow" is very useful. Even within your own site from the homepage it can be used and indeed I use it. E.g why send a chunk of PR to your Privacy page or T&C's page etc. Focus your sites PR to where you want it most, you can control this with nofollow. In saying this I wouldnt advocate extensive use of it.
