How do i get a page ranking?

Before today i though a page ranking was what page your site came up in google's results after a search. I know its wrong lol awfully wrong? But i have decent sites. I just don't know how to get a page ranking. my page rankings for all my sites are 0 apparently. How do i check my pr and how do i get one?

Try to find out some relevant link from niche site. Submit site to various directory, write article and submit various article directory with your site link. This is the basic way to get PR(page rank).

Is PR always increase in order ? For eg , i have a new site , and i have done all the link building for it very well in a span of a few days lets say a month & the PR Update is supposed to happen ..will my PR start from PR1 ...or can it automatically become PR5 or 6 depending how how well the link building has been done.
