Using a nofollow tag isn't something a directory normally does, is it? How many of the directories over here use a nofollow tag. The internet works by linking, even before Google existed. Does Yahoo! directory use a nofollow tag?
Will find out for you mam. But remember yahoo is not free and no one will pay them if it was nofollow. Edit: I was correct they are without nofollow as otherwise no one will pay them. But dmoz is not paid so big difference.
What is the difference? Do you think anything free should also be worthless? It would make more sense to me if you asked for a paid-link tag for all paid links. A paid link seems like less of a vote of worthiness to me.
These are nothing like DMOZ. These are not even directories(most of them) people don't use them to find what they look for, they just categorize links, if people pay enough noone really cares how quality the listing is, unless it's adult or illegal. There is absolutely no harm or cost to DMOZ using a nofollow considering it's actual purpose(spam-free internet guide), but definetly some gain, so i believe the resistance comes from editors wanting to keep their own backlinks and that commonly believed beneficial causes. If you think objectively, i do believe you will or already did see this is a useful idea. However i'd probably not love the idea if i were an editor, but we're not judging my values here , it's just what's supposed to be and currently the most cost-effective and efficient way. PS: Anything free does not mean it's valueless, it's just, if you have a company with thousands of employees, you can't count on "trust", it gets out of hand, if you can't audit them properly(not to mention if DMOZ can or not), you have to find the best way to avoid them abuse their previlidges, which is "nofollow" in our circumstance.
Since someone brought up how Yahoo! dir is a paid dir....I hate how it charges adult sites an extra 300 bucks. Just not fair. Go DMOZ!
Look at this way no one on dmoz i think even edits adult section, so is 2 or more years wait worth more than yahoos 300$ if you are looking for pr benefits?
Why not campaign to get digitalpoint to add nofollow to all URLs? That way, we can lead by industry example. Unpaid for links, no matter what the source, should be shielded from search engines. Let's have zero tolerance for zero dollar link drops. Before long. DMOZ will be isolated as the sole practitioner of an out-of-date art.
Only problem with this that SE will become useless then because spammers will occupy top spots, how will website rank if nobody links to them? In other words, nofollow tags mostly benefit spammers because there crappy websites are no longer obscured by some cool PR7 or 8 website which has thousands of backlinks and much to lose from nofollow compared to spammer which has zero or very few backlinks.
Ivan you have a point there, but also do not miss the point - there are also zillions of crappy sites ranking high b/c they are somehow listed in DMOZ -. It even became an industry finding dropped domains listed in DMOZ because noone checks them in that "2 months and see they are not even working", you can find a website which is listed in Canadian Dentists category(for eg.) which is now a word cloud lol. Also many parked sites that are listed, and not to mention so-called unofficialy paid listings. So bottom line is, for non-commercial websites, it's okay to be nofollow-free, like charity, govermental, foundations etc. But for commercial listings; adding nofollow is really necessary in my point of view.
I gave up with DMOZ. I applied months ago and my site still isn't up. I can't understand why so many search engines rely on them instead of doing their own thing.
for lack of a better term, I hate the entire concept of DMOZ. I wish there was a way to just pay them, say $500, to get listed in 24 hours. I hope I wont be sitting in the queue for a half of a year!!
I think charging that much would get even less people listed... I know I sure don't have that kind of cash. It might help in some of the commercial sections but personal pages, small sites, and most blogs would simply stick to the other free directories out there. Q
Wow markn26, if you have that much money to promote your site I'm sure you could make much better use of it in ways other than buying a listing in the ODP. Just ask around in the Digital Point forums, there are a lot of knowledgeable people who can help you out. In the meantime, if you haven't submitted since October of 2006, just go ahead and resubmit your site. Think of a listing in dmoz as more of a bonus than a necessity.
If only ivan was still an editor he would have contacted u secretly and would have made sure ur site was online at dmoz.
DMOZ would be a totally different kind of directory if it charged for submissions, esp. an amount like that. i keep the idea; nofollow for commercial listings o//
As soon as those $500 would get deposited to Bolton Hospice account (no PayPay in Croatia) I would list a website without a second thought - heck I would even cool it! I'm still standing by my statement that introduction of official payment for 24h listing in DMOZ would solve hunger and poverty in the World!
The reason wiki did the nofollow is because anyone can edit wiki and put in their links, nofollow decreases spam. DMOZ is controlled by editors, so the majority of the sites won't be spammy.
and countless number of editors are controlled by whom? You can't count on 1000's of people you pick out of a simple application form. This was the expected at first, however outcome wasn't like this as it became impossible to audit that number of editors. PS: The suggestion is only for commercial listings; so instead of charging for commercial listings as Yahoo! does, DMOZ can keep it free with nofollow so anyone will still be able to submit but abuses will likely to fade away.
