I have no idea why this particular issue has grabbed my attention other than it's constantly at the top of the headlines.

Kyle Sampson - the guy behind most of the scandalous e-mails testified before congress and offered a flatly realistic view about the scandal.

"The distinction between 'political' and 'performance-related' reasons for removing a United States attorney is, in my view, largely artificial," said Kyle Sampson.

He's pretty adamant that the firings were all legitimate - being that the President can fire these guys for any reason at any given time, and it's easy to follow his point of view.

Still, though, I think that this process has gotten out of hand. Presidential appointments are not meant to serve political purposes but are supposed to serve the interests of the people primarily. The fact that appointments get reviewed by congress is supposed to be the balance that ensures appointments are proper. Unfortunately, it seems that both sides of the political spectrum have left the interests of the people behind in favor of political gains and the interests of big donors.

I'm all for firing poorly performing government employees, but it seems from this particular scandal that the firing isn't truly based on performance and the new appointments are not the kinds of people who should legitimately hold these jobs. This statement truly applies to any manner of things and not strictly to US Attorneys.

actually, all the attorney's in question had contracts that were up for renegotiation...the attorney general just chose not to redo the contracts...Clinton did it to all 93 attorneys, why is this one such a big deal?

That's why it isn't a scandal now, nor was it a scandal when clinton fired ALL 93 attorneys on his watch. This is really the best democrats have to come up with. They do something with greater numbers and impact, without a peep, then when a republican does the same, it's suddenly an issue. Need hypocrisy? Vote democrat 2008!
