They use nofollow on all of their links so don't expect to get a great deal of value from a link there.

As far as using it simply as a promotional tool. You have to pick an article that is very specific to your site, then have something very targeted to the subject on the target page of your domain. I have several dozen wiki links for various topics.

Create something that is worth to put in Wiki, you will be there. Wiki is useless for spammers, as mentioned before.

The nofollow theory is correct, although it may change once they have a spam resistant system.

It is near on impossible to get your link on wikipedia unless it is totally related to the article you are posting on. There are people who spend a lot of their time editing the wikipedia site and they hate spam, so if there is a link usually they get rid of it.

I managed to get a link to stay on wikipedia, i posted a link to my photography site on a soccer teams page. My link said something like 'See Photos of this team in action'

I have about 3 dozen links (no lie) on Wikipedia. Just make sure that the links you're submitting have a lot of good content or other features that are expansive and different.

You maybe right...I was posting a link to an article that was posted today. The original question wasn't very specific and Rand (from SEOMoz) is a pretty trusted source in the SEO world, so I thought I would pass the information along.

Plus it says in the article:
I would think that your statement is valid, but much more dependant on what subject alvalong is trying to get into the wiki.

jabb thank you for putting my post in perspective for the original question...

70% of the traffic for one of my sites comes from wikipedia, so even if in SEO terms it is worthless, it can still be great for traffic.
