Why does the PR fluctuate? I.e. front page may dip from a 5 to a 3 but sub pages i.e. xyz.com/new/ goes from a 4 to a 5? Does anyone know why or how google PR behaves this way?

Their are a number of factors that determine your Page Rank. But your subpages PR will always be less than the top level domain.

PageRank is 100% determined by incoming links. Most sites have the most links to their homepage, making the PR higher. The home page links to sub-pages, which passes PR to those pages. If incoming links go directly to the sub-page, it can make the PR higher than the homepage.

A sub-domain is not the same as sub-pages.

I think --besides backlinks --activity on a particular sub-domain is also important for PR. If the sub-domain is more popular and visited by bots more frequently that page should have high points with G --which will eventually be awarded good PR --sometimes higher than the main/home page.:)

Usualy your subpages will rank a little lower then the home page sisce most of your backlinks would generaly point to your homepage. this may change if you have a page advertizing a specific product or a popular article that generated more backlinks or should i say better ranking backlinks to that specific page then it will recieve Pagerang value that trickels down from your home page plus the PR generated by it's own popularity/backlinks.

Visitor traffic has no affect on PR - none.

google pr fluctuate all the time but its not updated in the bar....The quality incoming links to those sub pages as well as content are the main factors to why this has been going up....As far as your index page is going down there could be many factors...one is that you have questionable sites linking to you or blasting your site out to directories to gain more points...I tried this before and my pr went down for several sites...did you change anything to the main site and have you done anything lately when it comes to link partnership on the main page?

    Good Luck

PageRank changes are directly related to the incoming links to a site, as well as the quality (especially originality) of its content. So this explains the change.

Johan - thank you for reading my post correctly. Yes I had someone submit me to many directories... I asked about this and was told this doesn't affect your PR. You think directory submission affects PR? How can I reverse this?

Also how quick does google update PR... because I recently did directory submission and my PR just changed last week... can google update that quickly?

mjewel is right, PR purely depends on the quality of incoming links, nothing else.

As long as there is a valid and relevant link to your page, it is considered a backlink and contribute to PR allocation.

Toolbar PR only updates once every three months, the next update should be in Apr :)

It is actually just the same as the name it self. Page Rank
it is not Domain Rank or Sub Domain Rank
so your page or sub domains will of course could be possibly get different PR. i think that's clear enough for you :)
