i new to the directory Business : i like to know how much should i spend on my directory server how much bandwidth and what size of directory to build (small directory ->low traffic| big directory - high bandwidth -high cost ) I trying to get something in between if possible . And again im not talking about Seo budget backlinks ect. i talking about server , script design .... i hope my question is focused in the right direction Thank you. Chris
Directories does not take too much bandwidth but i am on dedicated/190$ per month but i have other sites hosted on it not only directory. Saad
Bandwith requirements will not be high and most of hosts offer much more than you need. Most important is to have the server fast and stable.
To be honest, you'd be better off using the time and money to try something that hasn't been done a thousand times before. Almost everyone at Digital Point has a directory (I don't and never would) and if any of them see anything other than tumbleweeds blowing through traffic wise, I'd be amazed. The admin time can be better spent getting into affiliate / PPC - there's a lot more money to be made there than on directories. No one uses DMOZ or Yahoo Directory other than SEOs, so what's going to make yours 'better' than those established sites? Hope I can save you some time and effort. But, if you proceed, any standard hosting package would do you for the time being as long as it supports php and stuff.
I think you can use Servage which provides 310 GB space and 3000 GB bandwidth which is more than enough I am hosting my directories on it and also some other sites!
I'dd say it's more than enough. To start with, you probably wont be needing more than 5,000MB of bandwidth and less than 50 mb of space. Directories aren't a traffic getter, just here for SE's.
Agree! Start with something basic shared hosting package, later you may look at reseller package , then VPS and then dedicated. But for sure that would not be required overnight. There will be a gradual increase in BW/Storage, and there are scale options available.
Starting out you can go w/ hostgator for 10$ a month. I'm doing that for one of my sites. PM me if you want to know a great reseller hosting plan that works well for 10$ a month. I have like 15 accounts on that one all work well. Dubz
If you are going to get serious, down the road, you will want to consider going to a slightly higher end hosting platform eventually. In particular, going on a $5 a month host is great, as long as you have the capability to back up your database easily. However, if you need automated cron jobs and so on, you may need an accessible shell account, or at least some method of creating cron tasks on your host. Eventually, if you start to get huge, you'll want to get into a virtual private server situation where you have root access. This will easily let you manage and administer your site while allowing multiple users or developers access. Anyway, as stated, you should certainly start out at the $5 level until you have built and tested your offering... and then scale it up if and when you decide it is necessary. I'm not sure who has the best fast and reliable cheap hosting out there... maybe some people can chime in with that information. Page loading times are important... P.S. There are a million directories out there... but if you have a vision and the means to chase it... then you can certainly get into the market as well.
im using shared hosting plus plan for my directories i have only 100gb/monthly bandwidth for this also im using different servers for my all other sites.
Googlebot 53426+29 1.98 GB 28 Mar 2007 - 16:05 Inktomi Slurp 40850+2140 1.55 GB 28 Mar 2007 - 16:05 MSNBot 11928+1365 448.13 MB 28 Mar 2007 - 15:58 Search engines alone eat that up. I know I need at least 20GB
Can you explain more about affiliate PPC and why they are better in generating revenue from your website?
My VPS = $45 My Dedicated = $110 I recommend that you start with shared, later VPS, and if needed more, go for dedicated server.
To a directory, static IP is very important, so I spend extra $2 monthly for unique IP. My cost is $26+$2 per month Thanks
My cost is $4 a month, but all of my 11 some domains are an extra $5.99-$7.99 a year. I have 300 gigs bandwidth a month.
If you are new to directories, some low-end reseller hosting should be good enough to start with. In my early days, I was using $4.95/m reseller hosting (60GB bw) from reseller zoom for my directories. If you do more research, you could even get ssh access with such low end hosting plans. Once you get a feeling where your directory goes, you can upgrade your hosting plan easily or migrate to a different hosting company.
