    Title
First of all, let me make a short introduction of myself and this thread, I'm still a beginner on this directories line and I'd like to share my 'notes' that I've compiled within two short days.

Please do add on some notes that you think will let beginners and people who had never been in contact to online directories have a rough idea of what is a directory about online.{yes, share your notes!, learn together!} Without a further or two, let's get started!

    ---

    What is a directory?

We all know we have book-directories, like what Singapore has, Yellow Pages and a book directory allows us to search for things in an alphabetical index of the names and addresses of persons in a city, district, organization, etc., or of a particular category of people.

Online directories is not very-different from our book-directories, it groups world-wide-websites into categories and allows others to expose their web URLs and let others who are searching for some particular kind of category search for the website they're looking for easily. It is also a very good way of gaining traffic for web masters, online business-gentlemen and ladies.

I want to submit my website, what should I do?

First, get ready, these informations of your sites:

Name, URL(duh!), E-mail, Title, Description, Keywords and a Reciprocal page.

Secondly, search for free/paid directories and submit your website.

Last but not least, wait patiently for some directories' approval as some directories might take forever to approve your submission.

    Tips to be approved:

    Check out this thread out --> forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=278038. {credits to NRLMedia}

    What do I fill in?
Name, URL, E-mail are things that you should know what to fill in.

As for title, description, keywords and reciprocal page, there you go:

    Title:
Get an eye-catching title, not too lengthy, not too out of point. Get something descriptive and something straight to the point!

    Description:
    Describe your website base on what it really is. Don't exaggerate too much, don't forget to include the good points of your website too! {Say, your website has a high number of PR, like 9 or something. Add it in to your description!}

    Keywords:
KEY words! Don't go out of point!

    Reciprocal page:
For some paid and free directories, they requires you to link their page at your reciprocal page. Which means, you have to link them in your website, just create one website and link them, that's what you can do to also appreciate them for approving your website and also, some directories REQUIRES you to do that, but some it's optional. However, I do recommend you all to do a reciprocal page to link up directories.

    --

How do I check the directory page rank?

Go to, thebestdirectories.com/external/wrapper.html and insert the URL on the field provided and hit go!

A little green will be appreciated if this helped you in any way! :)

We do not agree with some of your points

    Your Quote
However, I do recommend you all to do a reciprocal page to link up directories.

Most Paid Directories do not have that option

    Your Quote
some directories might take forever to approve your submission.

Directories who operate on that basis are useless

 Can you help out telling me what do you not agree with? Those above mentioned are only what I've seen and interpreted by myself.

So sorry about any non-reliable information provided. Let's learn together. :)

Sure but please don't jump in and expect such an important OP with a thread title

    Directories Guide For Beginners

Before you lay down such an exact title its essential that you have an OP that is not/or maybe misleading

You have made a great post but trust that if you wish to compile a definitive document

You make 100% sure that it is accurate and clear and concise in detail

I don't agree with this part:

Title requirements vary from directory to directory. Many insist that you use the official title of the site, whilst others want to see a title plus some keywords. Some have a minimum length requirement, others a maximum. The only guideline worth a damn on this point is read the guidelines for that directory. So not necessarily something descriptive, short or eye-catching: it all depends where you submit.

Just another opinion, but if someone is submitting to every directory under the sun:

I think you should be recommending people to write unique site descriptions for each directory rather than just copying and pasting the same description to every directory.

Also varying the title tag from time to time too.

Hey Pete, how do you always use "We"? You respect yourself a lot, or there are several people behind Forplex? Company or so?

    Sorry for off topic.

Heh, to continue the off-topic. :p

If you are trying to have businesses be your customers, I believe they are much more confortable when they don't deal with an I, unless that person is very well known or branded. It may give more substance and professionality to your site and perhaps the expectation that you may be around for a reasonably long period of time.
