Thanks very much for your informative thread. As a beginner it's great to be able to read such helpful information.

Regarding your advice about using H1 and H2 tags, how can this be done if a site is formatted with CSS? Is it just a case of not being able to do it unless you manually edit the CSS-formatted HTML to override the CSS instructions?

    Thanks :)

No problem - the way I figure is by answering the questions now it will allow me to create a better article in the future because it highlights the areas where people wanted more information.

I'll be completely honest and say that coding and design isn't my specialty - I normally outsource the design of a complete template where possible - and just tweak it as I feel needed. So I really don't have a solid answer for you, largely because I don't really understand your question. So I recommend you just head to the DP Design section and ask around - but basically my template just imports a CSS file that defined many elements including the H1 and H2 tags.

Thanks for the info. Must have taken you a while to write that.

Where did you get the inspiration to go into the website business and start making money with AdSense?

Thanks Burta, I'll ask around over there!

What I was going on about regarding the H1 & H2 tags was that I assumed they had to be present in the HTML of the page body, rather than being called by a CSS class, therefore being elsewhere but the page body!

Dumnonii - you'd still have H1, H2 tags in your html body like so:

    <h1>Title in here</h1>

CSS just allows you to format how the H1 tag will look on your webpage. It doesn't replace the tag that you have in the html body, it just changes the look.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Dumnonii,

You can still using CSS. You only need specify a format from CSS to use at your H1 tag, like this :

    <h1 id="yourcssclass">
    <span>Yout title here</span>
    </h1>

If you need any help....ask ;)

    Thanks

Yeah it definitely took me awhile, I started writing just after Christmas when I was having a bit of time off just hanging with family and friends - so in my space moments I compiled it. That said it didn't take that long because I didn't really have to do any research or anything - I was just writing from my experience and well I'm not a slow typer so yeah... it took a fair few hours but it wasn't like I had to give up life for a week or anything.

LOL well I started my first site back when I was about 14 years old which was in 1999 just a much around music/mp3 site of the band I liked - I being the little entrepreneur I was spent more time marketing than developing my web design skills, from memory the site was getting about 500 visitors a day but it didn't make any money because it was just making it for fun. I eventually gave up on it, but started another site on another topic that I found interesting when I was 15 - 16, Dragonballs, again the site wasn't made to make money just a pure interest site, but from memory this one got to about 10,000 visitors a day and my free shut me down I just redirected the site to another DBZ site and called it quits, because I had to focus on school at that point being that I was moving into grade 11 and 12.

So I was out of the whole online industry for quite awhile until in 2004 when I took a basic website design class at university because it was part of my Business degree and yeah I just started messing around with sites again and at the end of the semester I thought - man I really should start another site - but being a little bit older and wiser I also looked for the opportunity to monetise it thise time around and at this point Google AdSense had been up and running for almost a year and it was just too easy not to do it.

So next thing you know I'm back into website design/marketing. Of course everything had changed in the three years I wasn't involved in the industry, the search engine giant was now Google who had knocked Altavista off their perch and well I sort of needed to go back to basics in regards to understanding SEO, but yeah I mucked around from 2004 - 2005 just really doing it for fun more than anything - and then late October 2005 - it happened - in my playing around on the net I found Digital Point and to a degree it really opened my eyes here is my second post on DP:

LOL you can even tell from my second post I was still sorta just playing around prior to October, but I could now see that there might be real potential in all of this.

It is so funny to reflect on it and see that less than 18 months ago I was aspiring to earn $100 in a month and now I earn three times that amount in a day. How quickly things change when you apply yourself.

So yeah, I don't know what to say in regards to inspiration I don't know if I have any other than just challenging myself everyday to be better than the last day - LOL - I mean my second post on DP ever was a goal setting thread! I think that says something. I'm just a guy that get's his eyes on something and goes for it - I enjoy the challenge and I mean all this AdSense earnings etc etc it's just a big game to me. A game that I get up in the morning and I enjoy playing - like anything in life - I just treat it like a game - sometimes you win sometimes you lose, but it's just a game at the end of the day and you may as well enjoy it.

Like I don't mean to sound like a wanker but all these AdSense earning figures they are really just numbers printed on a screen to me I enjoy trying to increase them but it's not because I want to buy a flash car or travel around the world. I mean this stuff is what I'd class as my job - but I don't really treat it like work. I mean I'm the sort of guy that if the surf is pumping I'm going to go surfing that day rather than stay at home and work on my sites. I'm the sort of guy that goes on holidays with friends every 6 - 8 weeks.

That said I'm also a guy that enjoys what he does and enjoys learning and improving - so I will often find myself working literally 14 - 16 hours days because I didn't have anything else better to do. I pretty much spend most of my spare time working on my sites - why? because I enjoy it. I don't like TV I try to limit the amount of time I spend messing around on the net, so I'd say I'm pretty good at not wasting time.

Like the old saying, "If you love what you do you will never have to work a day in your life."

It is sort of one of those issues that I think might become an issue in the future but at this stage is a non-issue. Header tags are fine to be formatted using CSS, and the use of them is actually beneficial for both users and search engine as they allow you use good content architecture by labeling your content. Search obviously think this is beneficial for determining site relevance to certain terms because generally headings of sites are good summations of the overall content.

Now where I think things might be interesting in the future is the use of CSS formating of things like H1, H2, H3 tag in deceptive ways but then in turn not letting Google access/crawl the CSS file to see exactly how the tags are formatted to see if there is anything deceptive involved.

I dunno, it's one of those topics that has two sides to the argument but in short they definitely aren't SPAM unless you are using them to SPAM. Otherwise in my opinion they are just like any other element that you optimize with good keyword integration to improve your rankings, no different to title tags, anchor text in links or keywords within content.

That's a bit of a harsh post? Considering it is a popular thread, providing good insight, visitors to DP, and also some inspiration! It got me working on my site again and I am really enjoying it. If you don't want to read it, there is nothing making you click on the link - plus it's not even your site, so why are you worried about so called "spam"? Seems a little bit like the green eyed monster of jeolousy coming through.....

That is one angry newbie... I would edit that out or you might be banned from the forum.

And? Consequently, I also have a site ranked about 300000 and it is making over that weekly?

So, what are you trying to imply my Pakistani friend?

You seem a bit hostile. Are you trying to get yourself banned from this forum?

LOL seriously dude is that big a deal - after all I'm not the one posting all the questions in this thread I just answer them for people to help them out. It's not like I'm really getting anything out of doing it - there are no affiliate links anywhere - I don't even plug any of my sites or anything - God forbid me wanting to help some people reach their own goals. Would you be where you are today without the help of people here on DP and forums and sites like it - I highly doubt it - so what are you so angry I'm only trying to offer people what so many have given to me. At the end of the day does it really effect you anyway...

I'm assuming he is just a genuinely nice guys like most people on these forums - unlike yourself - who is sticking up for someone who has done nothing other than be genuinely helpful to the members of these forums. By asking me to post responding to people and contributing to these forums you know you are defeating the purpose of a forum in the first place.

Ah... I see you are also naive as well - taking everything for face value. I don't normally promote my sites in public forums like these because I think it draws unneeded attention to them.

As for Phone Source - I'm a part owner in it - it's actually an Australia Phone Company - I mainly did a bit of design work and SEO for it whilst my business partner runs it.

You're awfully demanding of people aren't you - I get the impression that you may only be a boy yourself because most men are a lot more mature than the way you are acting. DP is giving and friendly place I really don't understand where all this is coming from.

I don't control the forum - I never in my wildest dreams thought this thread would become so popular - I mean I even called it "My 2006 AdSense Summary" LOL far from a look at me thread - LOL - I wrote this summary just as much for myself as anyone else - I thought it would be a good way to reflect on the year gone by and help me refocus for the coming year - and it has obviously help many others as well because I've had a number of people post in this thread, contact me via PM and even give me rep for the way the thread has "inspired" them and that makes me happy - so I really don't care what you think.

Best of luck with you AdSense ambitions Googlegr8 - maybe you can replicate a similar success and be selfless enough to share your insights.

EDIT: And just for the record if anyone who reads this thread and does have some questions I'm more than happy to answer them to the best of my ability. So please don't be turned off by some of these recent posts.

    Hi Burta,

Just wondering, in terms of articles, is best to split them up a bit over pages or have longer articles? Just thinking that I currently have quite a few things on one page, but I am thinking it might be better to split them up into their own sub-topics / pages to not only make it easier to find information, but to also give more exposure to more pages?

The first article (which needs to be re-written - in fact, I am going to go through them all again) is about 600 words, but the next one is about 1500 words.... the first article is quite rough and was just a first stab at things so I will go through everything again.

Any thoughts what has worked for you please?

    Many thanks,
    SHARKTICUS
