Can someone point me to a reference for this? I've never seen anyone connected to Google confirm they have keyword-specific algorithms/filters/penalties in place.

Also - is there an objective way to measure what is a "competitive keyword"? Given a list of keywords, how do you figure out which are competitive enough to be relevant to the (so-called) sandbox? If people are using on-line tools for this, what kind of numbers are needed for a term for it to be "competitive".

Just do a search for "Matt Cutts confirms sandbox" (although he won't say what google calls it).

There isn't any tool or list outside of google that is going to tell you which keywords are affected, but these are highly competitive keywords in certain sectors. Everyone has a different definition of highly competitive, but whether you are talking about an overture of 10K or 20K, it's not going to affect a keyword getting minimal searches or the name or your website.

That would explain how certain (low volume) searchwords immediately get captured by certain SEO techniques even though a) the domain is fairly new b) the site has relatively new linkbacks c) overall trust rating of site is still developing.

    Heck found this link

    http://adwords.google.com/select/Login

Apparently you can advertise on here for between £0.1 and £25 depending on the auction.
But strangely if you are a new website and lots of other people are bidding on the search term then you don't rank.
    Wow!
Bergerac? Eddie Shoestring? inspector clouseau? Axel Foley ?

    No a guaranteed income algorhythym.
Instead of focusing on the the minute detail the domain names, the age, the backlinks, DMOZ, Trust Rank, step back out of the bubble and see the wider
    implications.

mjewel, According to googles traffic estimator, the term is actually quite competitive...

I'll refer to my site. I had a site that had overture 3000 searches keyword base and it didn't get pushed into the sandbox. All my other sites that had substancially more searches had appropriate levels of sandbox time. Meaning the more competitive the more time the site stays in the sandbox.
