High CTR - Zero Conversions

Discussion in 'Google AdWords' started by local-realtor, Mar 27, 2007.

I am running travel campaign and I am getting about a 22% CTR on the ads but no conversions.

The ads are running only on the search network and taking the 3rd or 2nd spot. Any suggestions on landing page optimization or bid management?

You would need to provide a lot more detail about what you're doing for anyone to be able to help.

You should try and experiment with different formatting on your ads

Basically what happens with Adwords and any other PPC networks also, is that most people will see an ad and think - I wonder what thats all about. When they click your ad and have partiocular interest in buying anything, then thats just money tipped down the drain

One way is to use a lead page, so that when they click your ad you at least get their name/email to follow up later

I would also suggest you try other ways to stop the freebie seekers clicking on your ads, because otherwise you will pay alot of money and get ZERO conversions

The landing page is a list of last minute travel deals.

There are probably 10-15 deals listed for Mexico, Cuba & hawaii. The ad is pretty generic.

    Last Minute Travel Deals
    All inclusive vacations to Mexico,
    Hawaii & Dominican Republic
    domain.com/Save_10%

I tried destination specific campaigns & including the price as a pre-qualifier but they get 12-14% CTR with no conversions.

Your question is kind of like me calling my mechanic and saying "my car is broke, how can I fix it?". Not much he could do with that amount of info:)

Generally speaking if you're getting a decent CTR (and 22% is decent by most standards) that means you're writing a compelling ad that appears to answer the question/issue the user (searcher) is looking for.

When they get to your landing page something is not what they thought it would be - the info, the price, the location, the specs, etc, etc.

You should either work on rewriting your ad so it's representitive of your offer/landing page (better qualify the visitor) or modify your landing page/offer to better match your ad.

That's about as detailed as I can get without details:)

One thing you can do, using the car analogy, is to look under the hood and make sure that the sparkplug wires are connected. That is, make certain that real basic things are in place.

With affiliate work, I check that affiliate links aren't broken. Or that my server is actually serving pages. Or that my conversion tracking has the right tags. That's what I mean by basic. Then go from there.

Generic ads tend to get less than steller results.

If I were you I would only use exact match and would set up a number of different campaigns & ad groups so I could laser target my ad and landing page. That would hopefully reduce the actual cpc I was paying and would allow me to keep my ad(s) in front of a larger audience. I haven't done a thing in the travel industry but would guess users tend to do a ton of comparison shopping online, and, that the industry itself is ultra competitive. Is your landing page designed in such a fashion that users who were out comparison shopping might come back to it? Make it "bookmark friendly" to boost return visits and conversions.

    Good ideas.

--> Flip - everything under the hood is looking good. Great suggestion though. "Are you sure it's plugged in? is the light on?

All the KW are exact match.

PPC is not for the lazy folk. I am going to do a trial and instead of giving them a choice I will only present 3 products to select all for the same destination. I will let you know how it turns out.

Good call as too many choices online a lot of time leads to no action from the user. I'd suggest taking it even a step further - give them one choice that matches the query.

[discount mexico vacations] >>> LP for mexico vacations
[discount Hawaii vacations] >>> LP for Hawaii vacations

    and so on.

I think the first thing is to know who you are targetting and create many adgroups targettings those potential customers. Create targetted long tail phrases (I just sat at my comp for like 10 minutes and came up with a list of like 20). Then when you see "quality" traffic pouring in (mind you that it will be lower in volume than typical search terms of one or two words), just make slight adjustments in bids and ads (remember to use the A/B testing).

How often do you find your display URL coming up in your logs?

I am wondering if it is worth it to create redirects that match the display URL.

Are you sure your conversion tracking is implemented correctly? Check the View Source to ensure you code is on the page, and has not been corrupted.

Also, if your using Atlas for tracking, ensure that your tracking pixels are not out of date - have you tried clicking on the link to ensure that the link actually works?

The tracking code will is on the confirmation page after they book a vacation. The traffic is sent to a white label travel site so I can't check the code with out making a sale.

I am 99.9% certain it's in there and working.

Is there any way of running a test-conversion? Talk to the travel site, and see if they mind if you run a conversion with the name 'test'?

I assume that they implemented the code, since you can't access it. There's no way to be sure that it's been implemented (in the right place - I've been caught out like that) and working correctly.

There are a number of reasons that the conversion tracking code won't work, even if implemented properly - I'm no techie, but this has been a problem a few times in the past for me, most recently something about 'non-standard HTML coding'.

Without running a test conversion, there's no point in fixing everything else, other than that it's a good idea (!?)

There are a few problems you could be experiencing here...

One is that your link could be wrong but I am going to guess your not that stupid...

Let me skip straight to the main problem...

Basically I think your problem is most likely the landing page...

Your copy probably needs a heck of a lot of improvement...

You can get a critique at the copywriterbaord.com for free and I'd reccomend you go there for some real great advice...

    I feel landing page optimization
have you added Google analytics codes in it, just try doing that than you will be able to track the visitor's activity and that will help you a lot.

So at the copy writer baord do they check things like spelling?

Without seeing the landing page I think you're jumping to conclusions...maybe in effort to plug your own site? There are a lot of things on a landing page that can be tweaked to increase conversions outside of copy.

BTW, there's nothing on the copy writer site besides:

Try target specific areas. Don't advertise to every country in the world.

We are only allowed to advertise to a specific market so we are geo-targeting based on state & province.

We haven't really tried the city targeting yet. Is this reliable?

I am running 2 ads per group for copy optimization and 2 landing pages for each ad. I am mixing them up after a few days to see which performs better.
