Can Google punish my site for using the co-op ad network?

Discussion in 'Co-op Advertising Network' started by dutch_advertiser, Mar 27, 2007.

Co-op Advertising Network works great, my pages get indexed better and faster and traffic the last weeks is unbelievable. But I'm afraid Google might ban my domain for using this, I have heared this from an ex-user. Is this true? Is there an official statement from Google about this (Matt Cuts?)

Sorry if this has been asked before, I tried the search but couldn't find anything.

    Thanks!

    Hello,
You'd better check TOS of Google, but i think if you combine content based adds like BidVertiser and AdSense they may not like it..

Thanks. Did Matt Cuts talk about this? I don't want to risk anything, I'm not using Adsense or any other ad system, just co-op ads and my own banner script.

Coop ads arent contextual so they are fine with AdSense

He has been aware of it for a long time and no penalty has occured. Also the network is not hidden in any way (never has been).

Its really up to you if you want to use it after reading the TOS

I think a service that penalises someone for displaying text link adds for personal gain that displays text link adds for personal gain would be on a bit of a sticky wicket.

The issue is how much weight they give to these adds when they are not really relevant to page content (and we know Google likes that).

The only way to have the coop add network serve highly relevant content would be for the categories to be highly specific, or for them to become Google.

Now we know there is profit in that

Well I experimented by putting the ad network on one of my sites and it has just dropped out of the serps completely, with a drop from 4 to 2 in page rank.

    Hmm...

Who is to say you would not have dropped out of the SERPS anyway? Google is going through an update - most likely the coop had nothing to do with the changes you are seeing.

I do not think that Google, would punish your webpage for something this simple. It is clearly not against any TOS of Google theny you should be fine. Maybe you need to add some fresh content to your sites.

If Google decides that your site's only objective is to raise money through advertising *Adsense or Digital Point* then it is likely you will be penalised and lose rankings in the search engines.

Hundreds of quality sites running the Digital Point coop ads suffer no penalities whatsoever, as it is clearly viewed to be a revenue generator to support a quality website.

I don't believe Google are algorithmically jealous of other advertising networks - instead Google simply tries to algorithmically punish spam and generally crappy sites.

Make you site good, then think about advertising. Not the other way around.

It's widely known that google will apply penalties for link networks, non relevant linking, linking to "spam" sites and automated systems which effect its own alogrithm.

If you are happy enough to use a system like the coop which is known to effect googles alogrithm and also incorporates "non relevant linking" (and in some cases links to spam sites), then you should be prepared for the consequences.

There are a lot of people that report google SERPS from using the coop, but (arguably) a similar number that report penilisation. Most members will accept these risks as they don't use the coop on their money sites. The motto is "If you are prepared to live by the sword, then be prepared to die by it."

I take back my first post, 2 of my sites were 'sandboxed', and I removed the coop from the newer one, and it is back with its #1 serps, the original is still running coop, and still banned from google. It might be a coincidence.. or it might have everything to do with coop.

It might have to do with the full moon, or that you are wearing a yellow shirt. Or that the neighbor's dog is called Fido, or...

If you where a goldfish, then this logic may seem resonable. However, given that I hope some members here may look at things in a more perseptive and that more intelligent theories can be drawn.

If I stick my hand in a fire and it gets burnt, and then I stick my foot in a fire and it gets burnt - Thankfully I am clever enough to work out it would be foolish to stick my head in a fire. There are always going to be people out there that can't work out simple connections between their actions - needless to say they are the ones that get burnt more than others, and then put it down to being unlucky.

Ha Ha - From the man rambling about full moon, yellow shirts and neighbor's dogs called Fido - I would say that that has a bit of pot, kettle, black about it.
