Should I submit my site to only say 40 quality paid directories which pass PR or 1000 free directories?. Should I do both?

free directories cost you nothing. the worst that will happen is that they will not be counted as links. probably they will. I like to see if the directory turns up in a search (although it might not if it's a new directory)

There are some who would say that submitting your site to directories is not a good idea. I still don't really understand why. For now, we submit to the free directories only. But if you venture into the paid directories, might as well make sure that you choose directories with high PR and those that you are sure that your site will get listed.

Just submit to several big directories - of course paid ones.
The best to start link building is to submit to high authority directories like botw.org etc.. , then submit to your niche directories and start to asking your niche competitors for links.

They always say quality is more important than quantity. I think submitting to big quality web directories and searching these DP forums for the rising players of directory area to submit link while they are cheap or free would be the best way.

I would say go for both, free will come by time and paid will be guarateed listings within a short time.
If you have got a lot of time go for free or else paid for instant results

Google doesn't know the difference between paid directories and free directories.

So, as long as you are going to benefit from the link placement in the directory, it doesn't matter if it is FREE or PAID.

whether a directory is good can not be judged by whether its free or paid.

If the directory has good pr, has many authority back links, sites are listed following strict rules i.e according their relevancy , I think getting links from their has some value.

DMOZ is not a paid directory, is it?

Paid directories with high PR pages will certainly help to increase your website PR. In other hand free directories help to build backlinks for your site for free. So, what are you waiting for? Go for both.

The thing to remember is that today's free, PR0 directory could be a paid PR6 directory in a couple years. They all started that way, so by submitting your site to all the free directories you can find now, you'll increase your chances of hitting one of those that becomes very successful.

If you want to speed up the time it takes you to submit to directories, you should try my free, semi-automated directory submission tool.

Well free links are always better, because you dont have to spend any money on them, there free :D. Allthough, there is a really hot selection of paid directory's out there that you should really submit your site to if you want good results, apart from Dmoz the which is fee, from there paid directory's i would say. See, paid directory's have the cash to put more SEO into there site, so it betters the results of your listing.
