how can we be sure that it's really the more secure os? many flaws are discovered upon usage of new os releases. that's the time where patches come to the rescue. so, i guess it's a long way to go for vista.

It does? I think I just mentioned how many systems are bundled with Symantec if you catch my drift ...
Does Symantic make vista more secure?

The most targeted OS's are the ones that are the most popular. Is Vista or XP the most widely used. Lets see what the results are in a year.

Windows may be the most widely used.
But Linux are much more secure really. Moreover it is free : http://shipit.ubuntu.com
    They ship you free CDs.

This is just what Symantec is saying.. which is odd because they've been having problems with vista and some of their products.....

Anyways, I wouldn't believe a claim like this right now.

The most secure OS imho is OpenVMS - never is a long time and DoD agrees since they paid HP to keep the OS alive (for security reasons apparently) :) The big iron IBM is probably also up there.

It better have good security! 4 billion bucks and 5 years of creating it should count for something :)

I have it, and I like it a lot.

Mac OS is the most secure. It may have vulnerabilities, but the vulnerabilities would be extremely hard to exploit. For example. you have to intercept someone syncing to a bluetooth device and instantaneously intercept, decode, repackage, and resend data packets. Not really an exploit if you think about it. Apple does a great job of fixing these. 99.9% of users will never have problems.

Oh and viruses.. ha. I laugh at viruses. OS-X has my back more than Windows ever has / had.

But it also does depend upon the number of vulnerabilities discovered!

Symantec saying vista is more secure OS is really strange, since there have been many reports till now about vista security flaws. And it's a brand new operating system, wait till it gets more users, then we see. I don't think that windows OSs will ever get close to OSX, linux, BSD or UNIX.

I heard that it is not containing registry is it? If it is then viruses can not easily attack on it.

Yeah, what's the point of installing an OS that restricts you from actually doing anything useful? No Vista for me.

Beating the defaults .. however with custom packages and modules I'd say an independently / user supported operating system would be better ...

UAC really drove me crazy. I have disabled it because it kept asking for my permission - I had to grant for myself every action.

that is why it is called secure. Basically ... Of course it has many more features.

Vista has only been in the mass market for 2 months. Far too soon to say how secure it is, let's give it 18 months and then see.

However, I can't see how any propreitary OS can ever be as secure as an open source one...

I can guarantee that Symantec products do not come with Vista. They come with Vista only if the manufacturer decides to do so. I have a Toshiba laptop and it didn't come with mine. Though, I have a good antivirus program made not by Symantec (not particularly fond of Norton AntiVirus) and Windows Vista does come with Windows Defender, Microsoft's antispyware program and is semi-secure but I wouldn't say it's the most secure.

The most secure would definitely be either Mac OS X or Linux, not Vista.

I would still go on for third party security software even though windows gets on its stuff.
