Someone told me that it is really cheap to go to Costa Rica, is that true? has anybody had a vacation there? Which hotels and beaches would you recommend?

I lived there for a short while in '95 so my info's dated. Jaco beach and puntarenas are good areas (at least I went there LOL.)

Yep... ViciousSummer has been a bunch of times (maybe 4??). I've also been once (December of 2004):

...and I believe Crazy_Rob is going for the first time this year.

The only hotel/resort I would specifically recommend (although it's probably one of the more expensive ones) is Tabacon. When we went, we stayed there for the first 2 days, then after that we just cruised around Costa Rica and stayed whenever we came to a cool place.

Hey, Rob, let's get together and have some Piñas coladas over there!! :D

Shawn, did you take the canopy tour? How was it? I would love to take it... but I am kind of afraid of heights

I took a cheap surf trip to Jaco in 2001. I thought it was great for surfing there and nearby areas but Jaco itself seemed a little dumpy. I had a great time though so you might want to check it out.

Yes, Costa Rica is comparable to Mexico in price. San Jose is the area where there is legalized prostitution and various areas have some of the best scuba diving in the world. If you go, make sure you visit the volcanos and take a zip line through the rain forest. It's simply amazing. :)

I forgot to add that gambling is also legal but it's nothing like Vegas. Usually, they only have a few tables, some slots and lots of hookers hanging around those areas. You don't get free drinks while you gamble either. :(

Some areas in Costa Rica are just as expensive as California.

I've gone to CR for 2-3 weeks a year since '98, except for this year because I've been in Asia for the past year and flights from here are too expensive.

I don't know what brought such an old thread back into ciruclation, but if you go back, let me know. It's surprisingly cheap to hire a private helicopter to take you to an isolated beach where you will be the only one there. They tend to refuse doing this Oct-Dec though, because the rains come out of nowhere and they dont want to be stranded on the beach for hours.

After travelling the world I discovered southern Costa Rica, and decided to stay. It is a "Must See" country and should be on everyones travel agenda.

Forget the Northern Areas loaded with tourist, high prices and high rise living. Discover the true country by visiting the Southern Region, south of Dominical. Take in Golfito, Pt. Jeminez, Playa Zancudo, Pavones, or San Vito to see the flip side of heavy tourism.

Be sure to stop by Latitude 8 Lodge and say hello while you are here
