Does anyone know whether any of these scripts have reasonable anti-spam protection similar to Wordpress (e.g. Akismet + Bad Behavior). So far, none of the ones that I checked seemed to have any protection, other than some basic captcha which are easy for the bots to get through. Without some reasonable anti-spam, I don't think any of these scripts can scale without becoming useless. I have even checked out the paid scripts, and so far have come up empty. If anyone has run across a scalable script, I would be interested.

I checked out Pligg and was ready to try it out. I had some concerns about its scalability (performance) and built-in spam protection. To date, I still have these concerns, but I visit their forum periodically to see if there is any progress. I think they are just beginning to recognize the scalability issues. From my perspective, it is a waste of time installing a script and attempting to build a site, if at the end the script cannot support a large number of users. A webmaster might just as well park the site and save time, energy, and money.

I am quite willing to pay for a scalable site, but I think it costs to much money to build a well designed, scalable script, so no one does it. The hosted model, e.g. Ning, seems the preferred way to build scalable platforms, because I think the investors believe there is some payback with this kind of model. They may be right.

Hey RichRF, if you are looking into hosted scalable platforms like Ning there is also The Village (still in beta). It's very scalable and your media is hosted on the same content delivery network that Facebook and others use so the system is fast. Just thought i would throw that out there since one of you was looking at the hosted platform. Also, The Village has support, I'm not sure if all the scripts mentioned have that. Almost forgot to mention, it's Free!!

    Hi,

Thanks for the lead. However, hosted doesn't work for me, since it does nothing to build the value of my domain. However, they are excellent alternatives for companies who are seeking to build communities.

    Thanks again,
    Rich
