A former top American diplomat says the US deliberately resisted calls for a immediate ceasefire during the conflict in Lebanon in the summer of 2006.

    and

He said the US decided to join efforts to end the conflict only when it was clear Israel's campaign wasn't working.

does this confirms your understanding of what was going on at the time or are there new information?

If I recall correctly pretty much every sane person in the world was asking for a ceasefire because of the innocent civillian casualtys on both sides (but obviously loads more on the Lebanese side because of the superiority of the US funded munitions used.)

I remember thinking to myself "Why are the US and the UK not screaming for a ceasefire?" after seeing the terrible images of civillian children dead.

Then I remembered that John Bolton was a member of PNAC and the lack of pushing for a ceasefire all made sense. ;)

And as the Israeli army so manifestly failed to defeat Hezbollah it was all a waste of hundreds of civillian lives out in the Middle East region.

    Nothing new there eh?

Has Hezbollah or Lebanon returned the kidnapped Israeli soldiers that started the whole "situation"?

Calling for an immediate cease fire was a joke. Hezbollah kidnapped Israeli soldiers and they cries to the UN and the world to save them from the consequences, give me a break. Hezbollah is Lebanon's and Iran's problem. Lebanon does not get a pass when they allow terrorist groups to control their border with total impunity.

i was more interested to know if what Bolton has said is what you believed what was happening at the time?
did you think Bolton was working on a cease fire or trying to prevent it?

    Indeed mate.

John Bolton is the silent killer.

He looks innocuous enough to be a circus clown or a Santa at Christmas but in reality he is a very very dangerous bastard.

Speaking of the devil the dangerous fool is on Question Time on BBC2 in England right now, and he's getting a slating. :D

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Once again, we're in hindsight mode. hezbollah is frickin up Lebanon, Syria is moving rockets/missles to the border and many people in Lebanon are getting sick of hezzies stunts.

We should have asked them to stall even longer and just gone ahead and finished more of the job. When you don't finish it the first time, there will be a next and a next and a next. All for a few dozen virgins

There is no new news here.

Both. Bolton, and all sane people, were pushing for a cease-fire. However, no sane person was pushing for a one-sided cease-fire at the time.

In the end, what we got was a one-sided cease-fire. The Israeli's made peace and the Lebanese continued to make war. But, with that the world at large stopped paying attention, because who really cares if it's only Jews being kidnapped and murdered anyway, right?
