Best domains to consider at the moment?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by s25, Mar 21, 2007.

what domains, apart from .com, are currently doing well/ have potential in the future?

it appears to me that most .com domains are already registered (much to my frustration), so need a new direction to go in. .mobi's seem to be all taken too.

    any opinions welcome.

    cheers :)

After the .com, .net is more popular. Governments have started using .gov and some us business are having .us

I would have to agree .net seems to be the way to go if you can't get .com

    You could try IDN domains
    domains in other languages
    Also you could try ccTLD
    extensions like

    .co.uk - England
    .ca - Canada
    .es - Spanish domains

I invest in Japanese IDN domains but if you are timid of non Latin characters probable .es, .ca, or .co.uk is good.

Well, I definately say .net, but there have been some great ccTLD domains that fill in the domain. like:

    somethingpla.net
    totalwi.mp
    etc,etc.
They could be well worth it if you can establish a website that can have steady traffic and can stick to someone's head.

You know, I was wondering about that. In Albanian, there are a few characters in addition to the regular english alphabet, like ë and ç. A few days ago, i had a link submited into my link dir : www.çelsi.com. I thought it was bs but it really worked. Now, I wouldn't get something like that because most (probably 90%) Albanians use e and c instead of ë and ç, but it was cool.

If you do invest in ccTLDs make sure that you only get domains that the people in that region understand. For example you could probably register a million English words in

    .it - France
    .fr - Italy

but what would make sense is it you could find some premium(good) domains in that language.

Also about IDNs only register domains that are naturally typed by the people in your target language.

Domains cost yearly so be wise in your registrations
Always think about if you didn't own it, would you buy it for the price you're asking?

I've noticed .com and .net seem to be the only one's really selling.

I would definately go with .com .net .org and .info in the order.

Other places would be .de .us and .mobi

IMO, .net is still 2nd best, and .mobi is a hype-filled bubble that will burst once the technology presenting normal websites on mobile devices becomes mainstream and widespread amongst mobile devices. I still don't know a single person who's been to a .mobi site.

.org is good too if the site is a helpful site as opposed to trying to sell products. .org is stronger than most people give it credit for.

I agree that .mobi is over hyped.

It will be very difficult to overtake .com IMO.

As far as I can see there will be a new three letter extension released out by ICAAN in near future that will challenge .com and would serve next to .com

.com then .net, .info and so on. But don't you think that not everything is taken? You just have to be more creative and think of something that's not been said or spoken of before.
