In my opnion, in todays web world you need to spend money to make money. Adwords and some decent backs links (one way - you'll have to pay) would be a good starting point.
Goto Google and type in google webmaster tools and submit your site to them, set it up and verify your site, publish a sitemap and have google crawl your great content so it gets indexed nicely. Submit to Directories and keep the content updated and growing every day (or week at least).

adwords works well for new sites and if you have a quality site, you will see return traffic and this can snowball...
I beg to differ. I had a site I advertised on adwords that I sent about 4k uniques to in adwords a month, it got about an extra 1-2k uniques, 500 of which came from the big G in the SERPS. I stopped advertising via adwords and almost immediately it lost SE traffic. It also lost it's PR the next update. Now I am not saying this is true , but it is a pretty good story.
