Why can't teens get their own checking accounts?

Just wondering what the reason was...

if there was any other reason than believing that teens... and kids are just to immature with money to be able to get a checking account.

what are your feelings on this rule? :D

btw... I'm 14 and went to get one yesterday but wasn't able to
(wanted it to put the money I made off the internet into... so I could purchase my own domains, and hosting without having to use my mom's... which never seems to have money in it... lol)

It's not all too bad as my birthday's in 2 weeks and the bank-person is letting me have a savings account with atm card and all that crap when I'm 15... just because I seemed so mature :p

But still! Hows a kid supposed to make money on the damn internet these days, without having a checking account to use with paypal!

Well, the notion is that kids should be spending time in school and enjoying life and typically would not be out working or getting a job. Education is important as when you are young, you can absorb more.

There is also the contract law which states that contracts made with minor are non-binding because minors are probably not as experience in life and may not understand fully the consequences of their action.

You cannot actually have a Paypal account unless you are 18 years old. The contract with Paypal said so.

I bet there is a way to have a bank account with parental help.

My sister and I had passbook savings accounts from the time we were kids as did my niece and nephew. The kids accounts were called squirrel accounts. Each time they made a deposit they received a coupon for a free DQ ice cream cone.

if you have a bank account you can get a paypal account, if you have paypal you can earn money.

Everyone has a bank account even if as a kid you cant withdraw from it - im all for kids being able to have websites etc, id gladly support any - 2 reasons it means you can get a good price on work (possibly taking advantage slightly) but it gives them spending money, experience in the adult world and if everyone is happy where is the problem? It also means they build up a contact list from early on which in the long run will benefit them - i always reward loyalty and once ive found a reliable source i stick with them.

Well, the issue is that teens sometimes cannot read, if they did, they would not have signed up for Paypal because their Terms and Conditions http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/ua/USUA-outside specifically states

So if you do sign up with them, it shows that you cannot read or that you are not mature enough to accept responsibility.

If you ignore simple terms then how can you be trusted ?

Why are yall tripping on him.

How many 15 yo do you know even thinking about making money and yall are dogging on him HARDCORE!!

Whatever bank you went to leave and dont go back. Like the other guy said they should have an kid account, but honestly get your parents to open an account with you.

The kids accounts have major limitations but I huess its an option. I am sure your parents would be proud you want an account at 15 and would get you help with it.

You better be nice to this kid, he might be your boss one day.

I am not tripping on him. It is just that if you want to do business, you need to be honest and if you have to lie about your age, how could I trust you ? I mean Contract Agreements are there for a reason and if you just ignore them then what that says about you ?

    yo, yoos trippin dawg!

anyways, even if I can't read... atleast I can type :D

and probably faster than you :)

But this post was not made to make enemies.. I just wanted to see other people's views on the topic

I really don't have any problems... as I can start really using all this stuff in a couple of weeks.

I agree that a few years ago when I first got into webmaster'ing and making money online... I wasn't ready, and most people my age probably wouldn't be either.

by the way, that 15 year old up there is a total dick...
do not associate with him... haha :D

I think the major reason why financial accounts are limited/restricted in the USA for those under 18 is that contracts are not enforceable against them.

If a teen is unable or unwilling to play an adult's game, that teen should give
it a long and hard thought. You play with fire, you can get burned.

    Badly.

This is not about not wanting to play an adult's game...

    it's about wanting to

therefore... what the hell are you saying?

I went into the credit union with my 17-year-old daughter. I expected to have to open a joint account, with me as co-owner until she was 18. Wrong.

They opened a checking account for her entirely in her own name. I was surprised but pleased, since she was starting college and deserved to have her own account.

Like i said before im all for kids doing business on the internet, so long as they go about it in the correct way
