Policy On Username Changes

If you want your username changed, you need to have a *very* good reason to do so.

Reasons like, "I sold my domain", "I don't like my old one", "I work at a different company", etc. are not good enough reasons IMO.

The biggest reason is a bunch of "nasty" SQL queries have to run on the DB servers, and the database for the forum is just getting too big. In some cases, a username change can seize up (meaning no one can use that server for the forum) a DB server for 5-10 minutes. Forces a few full table scans on many gigabytes of data.

So from now on, you need a very, VERY good reason to change it (I can't think of a good enough reason off the top of my head, but maybe there is one).

A VERY VERY good reason would probably be that you sold the trademark to your name and now the person who bought it wants you to remove it off you completely else they will sue you.

Although an awesome policy I'd say, EVERYONE seemed to be doing that these days. Oh and Kulwinder, you did NOT have a good enough reason as per the new policy when you changed your username, I am 100% sure about that.

I think most people have their usename changed just because they don't like it. I had the same reason when I had my username changed. Anyway, I think I'll stick to "jdR!pper". :D :D

A sensible clarification Shawn. Hopefully no more '10 post wonders' will be wanting to change their username only a month into their life here at DigitalPoint!

Horrible to see a post by someone with 10 green reps and wonder "who the heck is this guy?"

I changed my name from mattevers to MattEvers a while back. I just forgot to include the uppercase when I signed up.

I can't think of a good reason other than that. Maybe that isn't even a good reason.

I thought the same thing, anyway its a good decision, people usually are not allowed to get their name change anyway, and It does become confusing when long term members change their name.

Thank God, I've changed my username a few weeks back. Previously I had my name as my username. I changed because I did not want Adsense to come after me after seeing all my posts :D

Is this a database design problem? why not create another table which maps the login id and what is displayed as user name? that way the login id does not change only the name displayed changes.
I guess there are many database experts in the forum who can provide some viable solutions to the problem
