Who needs Vista??

So I gave Vista Ultimate a spin for a week (Dell sent me an "express upgrade") and loved the way it looked but hated how sluggish things were.

Vista was a huge memory hog and used 80% of my resources IDLE. I'm guessing Aero has a huge system overhead. So i reinstalled XP and installed some add-ons that installed my favorite vista features - Flip 3D, sidebar, and the general look. The end result is that I got a very similar look (there's an actual vista theme but I like the one I used better) all while being MUCH faster.

    Some pics:
    Desktop with sidebar
    Flip 3D
With all of these addons running, cpu and memory use is still SO much less than Vista

If you are a gamer, vista is useful for DX10 but for anything else it is just a waste of processing power.

I recommend sticking to xp unless you have a mega hardcore rig.

why didnt you just leave vista installed, but turn off aero glass and just use the aero basic visual look....

that way you would get all the new features of vista, and it would likely run a little better.

You can also use vista's hardware performance rating to see which areas of your hardware are holding it back, it could be a slight RAM upgrade could improve things drastically..

I just did the Dell upgrade this morning, and I've got to admit I'm impressed so far. Pages are loading much faster in FireFox which is sort of a surprise and things seem to be running very smoothly.

I think this might have something to do with my PC--It's brand new and sort of top of the line in terms of what Dell offers, so I guess the hardware I have is what they had in mind when developing Vista.

"The better is an enemy of the good" and that's what I think about Vista. My sys is solid stable and I do not need to change anything right now. Only developers of software which I use can push me to start thinking about update by set requirements on V. In any other case I can't find V. useful.

I would still use the old DOS if you could run your programs on it, I remember we hated Win95 so much when it came out that we removed it, swearing all the way about how they got rid of efficient commands and put in a clunky window interface.

I'm not touching Vista until the first service pack at least, so they can work out the kinks.

you're going to be waiting a while...AMD's stuff is still a little expensive, and the socket F stuff is not around that much yet...I know intel has there's out, but I'm not an intel guy..
