The adsense ads for blogs hosted on blogspot.com were replace with the navigation bar on 8/16/04. On 8/23/04 Blogger anounced 'Blogging for dollars' and all Blogger users should now have an adsense invite when they log in.

I see this as Blogger / blogspot.com / Google / whatever no longer collecting the revenue from the ad clicks on blogspot.com. They are now allowing the bloggers themselves to collect it, which is a good thing in my mind.

AdSense is optional now for blogspot hosted sites, and if you opt-in, you make money because you use your own AdSense account.

The bottom line is they are not making it a requirement for their ads to run on free sites RIGHT?

This will bring in more users to their system in the end if folks get an incentive to put up more content because they make more money.

RIGHT? IN THE END GOOGLE MAKES MORE THIS WAY, RIGHT?

Doubtful... Google will still make money, but it's probably going to be less. Before ads ran on 100% of the sites hosted at Blogspot, with 100% of the proceeds going to Google. Now that it's opt-in most people are not going to run AdSense (you have to go through the hassle of signing up for an AdSense account). So I would say if they are *lucky* they might get 15-20% signing up (the people that are savvy about AdSense already do it and don't host it on Blogspot [like me]). So they are going to have way less AdSense impressions on the blogspot.com domain, and the ones they do get, they now have to pay out most of the income from it.

Truthfully, not exactly sure why they did it other than to just be "nice". I wouldn't have done it if I were them, that's for sure. heh
