Hey guys, whats your opinion on proxy scripts? Do you like PHP or CGI more? What do you use on your site? Please don't post someting like "PHP Roxzors my soxors" or "CGI FTW" Give reasons to why you like either one. For example, i run my proxy at www.freesurfez.info and i use PHP because it is much faster. It also has many more options than CGI and uses less bandwidth. (or so im told)
Actually, CGIProxy uses less bandwidth than PHProxy, but is much more RAM/CPU intensive. There's the tradeoff. The new version of PHProxy can log onto MySpace, which was one of the big selling points of CGIProxy over PHProxy. Hope that answers some of your questions.
PHP because then you can find more php programmer in the market too if you need to modify or anything in the script later on.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but CGI is not a language in and of itself. It's the 'Common Gateway Interface' that is spoken by ANY language that is used to create dynamic / scripted web sites. Therefore, almost by definition, PHP speaks CGI itself. So when the OP mentions 'CGI', what exactly are they referring to? Perl? C applications?
Thanks for the info, MrX. I just saw mention of 'PHP vs. CGI' for proxies and didn't really put two and two together Sorry guys...
Pretty stupid thing to say, they both use the same amount of bandwidth because they both work in exactly the same way EXACTLY the same. So is the sun and you'd be royally fucked if that were to dissappear, not a good reason. When php runs on windows servers in runs as a cgi, you're totally right. Both scripts are crap, and don't really constitute a website, but anyway IMO php is generally better and more flexible than perl which is what you meant by cgi I think.
