I thought this would be interesting to ask to see what directories inspired you the most.

It could be for a positive or negative reason...

It could be the reason you started your own or which one you chose to model after...

If the directory is on the poll, choose it, if it's not, let us know which one and why.

It could be more than 1 as well.

    :)

We know you all expect the most votes to go to DMOZ:eek:

But we shall not be voting for them ;)

I included them in there because they inspire me to promote. Remember, both Alive and Aviva are only 2 years old. Before them, there were only really a handful of popular directories. So...

When I began, I was mainly inspired by Yahoo! Directory because it's one of the best as far as quality, editorial standards, and revenue.

wowdirectory gave me a hint ;) It was not for directory perspectives but SEO. It was my lucky day to change the course.

I simply thought if they could do, I could do it also. And it took few months but surely worked.

LOLOLOL, not a very egocentric commentary...

I would vote for several each influence me in some way.

    DMOZ (category structure)
    Alive (linking campaign)
    Aviva (quality seeking)
    JoeAnt (community editing)
    Yahoo! (Just make money)
    BOTW (no refund policy)

To call it an egocentric remark is childish of you.

I set my own standards and I don't follow anyone. I bring out uniqueness, not copy people. I don't brag about anything I do, I let the things I do speak for themselves and get noticed amongst my peers. I don't spout off my directory alongside the bigger more saturated and established directories to try and gain some sort of attention. I don't try and cheat my PR, I earn it.

I could go on and on about a lot of things, but again, there is no sense in trying to explain these such things, to a child minded directory owner.

and for the record, Skaffe is one of my more favored directories, but they weren't listed.

ps.s. shut up malcolm, I know you're about to post

    p0w!

I am yet a toddler in the industry:p

I can't say any of the directories inspired me. Before here--I was a link builder. My involvement there has got me fascinated with Human Edited Web Directories and that way --I became an infant directory owner.:D

    Currently, Wow Directory.
Great features they have. Just that it is so damn expensive.
