I am about to have new directory, but I am having troubles with naming it. There are a number of ways to create domains. Such as: Create something new and unique. Like a brand (forplex.com) Combine a word with "directory" (avivadirectory.com) Include numbers in the name Just any two words (blueraccoon.org) Now, I think the best way to create a directory domain is to combine a word with "directory" word. So, what do you think is thee best method to name a directory?
Use "Directory" if you really think people are going to find you through search engines using the word "directory". It's relevant if you want a general directory, but otherwise much less so. If you want to build a niche directory, concentrate on one keyword that defines your niche, and combine it with another short word or word ending that gives it uniqueness. For example, "Widget Seek", or "Widgetizer".
I've been thinking about this recently too, and have come to the conclusion it doesn't matter much about the domain name. If you saw domains like avivadirectory, directorydump or forplex on the domain sales you'd probably only bid a few bucks, it's when the site becomes strong the name becomes strong.
We think that all options are viable but each particular one is totally dependent on How you Promote and Market the Name Therein lies the key to whether you will establish the name (plus as standard, you must build back links, pr etc etc etc)
It's getting harder and harder finding names, but if you just try to think of one you'll eventually be able to come up with one. Example: Searchtified.com not really a word or atleast not now anyways Reg 2 months ago Example: SearchmyDirectories.com Keywords rich Reg about a month ago. Example: TheBestDirectories.com Keywords rich but long names You can laways go for Thelongesteverdirectorynameonthisplanet.com if you wish and some people could careless aslong as you are trying to build some reputation into it is what matters.
I think the name is on the title of your thread! Just get www.bestdirectory. ......... whatever extension you like
It's interesting that the big players now are all made-up, unique, short names... google, dmoz, yahoo But of course years ago I remember infoseek too. And I guess Microsoft Live Search is reversing that trend as well now.
Thanks, For you ideas! Does any one know any tool for generating cool domain names? I want to post some but I don't have the right to do so yet.
if it was in my control i wud take dir.com or directory.com because the domain alone wud worth alot forget the content

Yes, you can use these tools to generate just about anything: http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/ There's a Web 2.0 name generator on it at the moment, if you want to fo for a Yahoo/Google/Dmoz-like brand. Using your brain? What do you think this is Malcolm, 1999?
