    1st choice:

    Hostrocket.com Dedicated Server
    $100/mo
    1.8mhz AMD Sempron processor
    80gb hard drive
    512 mb RAM
    1000gb bandwidth

    2nd choice:

    Asmallorange.com VPS
    $90/mo
    512mb ram
    20gb storage
    250gb bandwidth
    Intel Xeon 2.8ghz processor (shared)

THis would be to run my 3400 member vbulletin site.

You have to check with asmallorange how much user per VPS node? :)

Is 512 enough ram for that? cPanel uses almost 256.

The final answer is going to be determined by peak users online at one time.

I do not think either is offering enough RAM. I think you should look at options with 1 GIG because RAM has the most impact on the number of concurrent users you can have.

Secondly, for a $10 per month difference, I would go with a dedicated server. For me, VPS needs to be $40 to $50 cheaper.

A VPS is a pumped up shared hosting environment and you are affected by the activities of other VPS implementations on the same machine.

Reviewing the forums for a VPS host, I noticed daily complaints about each of the machines offered by the company, where heavy use by one or more other people was dragging down the responsiveness of other people. VPS servers have ways to prevent such conditions from occuring, but they are not perfect.

Having said that, I believe that you should always evolve from shared hosting to VPS to dedicated in order to keep costs more in line with revenue.

lol 10$ wont make much difference buddy. better go for a dedicated server with 1 gb ram. it can handle your queries easily. else if the server load will go high then your site will become too slow and 3400 members doesnt mean that they will be online all the time and if your site will go slow or will be down then google can panalyse your site.

As a third option, you might check out ServInt. They have some competitive packages. I have two VPS packages, one of my own and one for a client I manage. Been with them over a year now with no problems.

Matter of fact, after evaulating server loads and apache processes on one of my VPS last week, at 2:00am in the morning, I decided to upgrade the server from an Essential to a Signature server. Used their support ticket system and had a response and upgrade in 5 minutes. At 2:00am in the morning, you just can't beat that.

yeah go for the Dedicated server, much better and only costs $10 higher. Personally i would strongly suggest www.ayksolutions.com for dedicated servers. very friendly staff, updates you constantly, cheap addons. they really value their customers. ive been with theplanet, hostgator, lunarpages and they are all crap in my opinion and personal experience.

    just my 2 cents.

I'm with www.hostdrive.com at the moment and it's great. It's shared, managed hosting, but they offer dedicated as well. You'd have to ask them if they provide cpanel, their support has been amazing.

I was with serverbeach for a long time, and they are very solid. A little pricey, but solid boxes, you'd have to a heavy site to lag there. Virtually no outages, unless and HD goes... they might offer RAID at this point, not sure.

I am with SLhost and they are great as far as VPS goes. Got a level III package that comes with 900G of BW but only 512 of RAM for $500 a year. Depending on peak users for you forum that may or may not work.

The more important thing to me is if they are managed or not.

    What's the difference (pro/con) w/ managed/unmanaged one?

Which one is more valuable (for the price & specs):
    Lunarpages / ThePlanet / Stargate

    Very briefly,

unmanaged/self-managed = No Support, everything is up to you. If you need support you are likely to be charged (a lot in some cases) for it.

managed = Some support (varies a lot between providers - check to see what the provider says they support because it can range from pretty much no support to full support)

fully managed = Full Support, your host's support covers most system administration issues, they monitor the server and restart/fix downed services, etc.

When you decide on the level of support you need, make sure to take that into account with the pricing.

 If you don't know how to manage a server this is vital for you. Can you secure a server? Can you troubleshoot your httpd or prvimages issues?

Unmanaged - you figure it out
managed - they figure it out

got it, thanks! that's why there a lot of add-on options for dedicated server

I've never worked on that but I'd like to learn :) Isn't it that hard?
I'm considering on getting a dedicated server in the near future, if it's not too hard 2 manage..
Any suggestions on where to get managing server 101 tutorials?

Which is better between these & what options is necessary:
    stargate
    lunarpages
    theplanet

    thank you!
