Too many backlinks a bad thing (spam?)

If a site gets too many (thousands) of backlinks from the same domain (i.e.; Myspace) is it possible that G might penalize it ?

I get a lot of backlinks from image/video codes that people post on their Myspace profiles, and I'm wondering if too many might be a bad thing..

I believe Google and other search engines will not penalize your page if it receives tons of links from the same domain. Why? To prevent sabotage.

It would be easy for your competitors to destroy your site if the search engines penalizes this act. The furthest they (search engines) will go is to devalue these links.

I think it also depends on how long did it take to acquire those backlinks.

I don't think the site is penalized, rather the value of those links.

In some of the search engines too many backlinks are treated as a spam.

I don't think they will ban you but the links will be devalued....buts that's ok because you are going to receive a lot of traffic from these links

Another factor to consider is the ratio of links from this one site in comparison to the other links you acquire, how quickly those links are made, and more.

However I think what the others have said is correct; you won't actually be penalized for these links, instead their value will just decline.

I agree 100%. Its out of your control whol links to you.. I don't think google would put that as a factor in their search algorithm. I mean this would complicate the the ligfe of a webvmaster of he had to spend hours and hours seraching whether his/her vbacklinks are from the right places.

On another note, I think google simply counts a sitewide as a sinle link nowadays.

Exactly. The most important thing is consistency. If you're building thousands of links quickly then fine - as long as if you do the same amount of link building every week

As long as they are not link farms, gateway pages or all from the same IP it really should be fine. If you're cheating the system it aint good. If it's genuine or mainly genuine then you should be fine.

if this were true the bigggest myspace resource sites would not have ranked well in google.
the sites that rank top on google for kws like myspace layouts, myspace comments and other big kws get thousands of uniques every day and an equal no. of back links from myspace for the vistors using there sites.

google sure has a filter for this.
