Free/stolen WiFi - anyone use Hamachi or iPig?

Just wondering if anyone has first hand experience creating a VPN to use with free/stolen WiFi? I've been meaning to install Hamachi or iPig for months, but haven't really needed them - until I went on holiday last week and was too scared to check my email on public WiFi.

So do you use Hamachi everytime you're on public unencrypted WiFi?
How exactly do you do it? VPN to your home PC and connect to the outside world from there?

From what I've read about iPig, you don't need to have your home PC running - you can tunnel your traffic thru the free iPig servers (with traffic limitations).

OK... for anyone that's interested in safely using unencrypted public WiFi for more than surfing - I'm going to answer my own questions...

    iPig
I've tried iPig, and it works perfectly using the free iPig servers - but for some reason I couldn't connect to the iPig server on my home PC. Probably because I was trying from my laptop which was already on the LAN. Anyway.. if you can live with the traffic limits of the free servers, then iPig is an excellent way to secure your traffic over public WiFi. Once iPig is running, ALL your internet traffic is encrypted, so you can safely transmit 'sensitive data' (e.g your email passwords) across unencrypted open WiFi.

    Hamachi and UltraVNC
I also got Hamachi and UltraVNC running - which basically means I can sit in front of my home pc from anywhere in the world, as long as I have internet access and my laptop with me. And because it's running thru Hamachi's encrypted VPN it's also safe to use on public WiFi.

It was all way easier than I expected. Anyone who hasn't tried it, should.
