Where can I find a FREE pixel ruler/estimator?

I'm talking about a tool that will allow you to click and drag an area on a webpage (say an image on a page) and determine the approximate pixel dimensions of the area/image selected?

Look in your Firefox web developer extension. It's under Miscellaneous.

Or get the MeasureIt extension for firefox. I use it quite a bit and it is pretty nice.

I use Screen Calipers http://iconico.com/caliper/ but I use an old freeware version that still works great. I looked to see if I had the original install but I don't.

    I've also used http://www.spadixbd.com/freetools/jruler.htm, it's still free

This is one of the best along with calipers mentioned above :)

http://www.fabsoft.com/products/ruler/ruler.html and you can estimate, pixels, inches or centimeters with it, including a handy calculator.

Looks good, but how do you download? The download page redirects to another page and the ruler isn't listed. I'd be interested in trying that app.

If you do any web development, you absolutely need Firefox and the web developer extension. Ergo no need for another application.

    An excellent tool, no doubt.

I guess that's true, if your designing amatuer text-only sites for firefox users.

If you develop professional cross-browser compatible sites you'll want to use all of the tools available and, if you create sites that make any use of graphics, a desktop application that allows you to compare measurements across different browsers and graphics applications is very usefull.

No professional web developer who knows his stuff is without Firefox as his primary test bed. And, "text-only"? Where do you get this?

I do exactly that. My primary profession is code fixer. Companies, often web design companies with lots of graphics-heavy designers, come to me to make their pages x-browser friendly, or more usable or more accessible. My code is running in sites for everything from a small boutique jewelry design house to a magazine publisher's site (and you think they aren't anally graphics oriented?) to multinational telecom conglomerates' sites and points in between.

The tool you need for x-browser development is a knowledge of the way things are supposed to work and a knowledge of how each browser actually does work. I would have trouble thinking of a less necessary tool than a ruler. It can be handy as a shortcut to determine the computed value of dimensions specified in ems or percentage. That's it, handy; hardly necessary.

How about you go buy a clue before you start talking about what a "professional" needs to develop "cross browser compatible sites"?

    ouch

I think you read more into my response than what I was trying to say. It wasn't a personal attack. Firefox and the web developer extension are useful but I disagree when you say "Ergo no need for another application".

I never said a "ruler" was "necessary", I said it was "very useful". As a "code fixer" you probably wouldn't have any need for a "ruler" (working with graphic layouts != creating graphic layouts).

    Relax,

    Rich

BTW, impressive portfolio. Looks like mine did about 6 years ago.
