I was planning to buy vbulletin but now I decided to go for free forum software first and will convert to vbulletin if got enough traffic.

I would appreciate if you could tell me which is most secure free forum software as I don't want too many spams in my forums.

    thank you

It happens to every forum ... I have vbulletin, mybb and punbb forums installed and spam is on all three. The most spam I get on vbulletin, then it is mybb and unusually on the biggest forum which is punbb I get maybe only one spam sign-up a week .... on others vb and mybb spam sign-ups come on daily basis ....

All scripts are a target for spam. I was able to stop spam on my forums (all scripts, not only phpBB) after installing some nice hacks that would change the registration page and make it impossible to post images and links under let's say 5 posts

Brilliant, can you tell me what do I need to install to increase security for SMF? I would appreciate your help. With phpbb, some spam bot destroy my forum by putting links to adult site even though my forum is money making tips forum.

    But IPB isn't free.
So another vote for SMF from me :)
And on my forum using the latest version I haven't had automated spam yet.
Only 1 or 2 manual spammers.
So wouldn't bother to install any mods in the beginning.
You can do it once spamming gets serious.
