How do you monetize your directory?
I've been wondering what the point would be in making a directory because i do not see much potential for a profit there.
Am I wrong in this perception?

This is crazy, buy (or get free) a directory, wait a few pr updates, then sell it - this is the road everyone seems to be taking... Now, if someone were smart, they would actually buy all these directories... then have the power of a Huge Friggin Army (or is someone already doing this? Chris? Jeffrey?... sorry if I leaked your plans, haha)

Perhaps people lost interest? Or it just takes up too much time?
Or perhaps it is not making enough money to carry on?

Provide first a free submission until you have a good directory prestige developed and then you can charge later on for the submission on premium listings.

This is just like AdSense, you first develop and promote your sites and then later on when you have all that it takes to including the popularity in the web, then that is the time that you can incorporate AdSense in them. :D

Disagree, find some quality links on Google to start your directory and have it paid from the beginning.

Because they provide valuable one way links. Yesterday I received 4 paid submissions from an SEO consultant to improve the rankings of his clients.
