Why did you make a directory?

Lol funny question - But why did you decide that'd you'd make a directory? For money? To be recognised more? Or simply out of boredom :)

For me, i had made free directories in the past but never really put much effort into them. I saw some PR5 directories popping up from nowhere, so i thought why not? It was the a spare of the moment thing, but i don't regret it one bit ;)

Looking forward to your replies :D

On Dp at least 98 percent if they are honest, at least judging by the quality of the directories.

Got fed up with, "database was lost" routine, so decided to make my own. That was a year ago, now I have 7 directories.

I forgot also to help rank friends, clients etc. And yes, a directory is a great way to rank for some tough terms using the content of unique descriptions.

I am a editor at DMOZ (no comments please) when the site went down in October decided to build my own. I have to say I am enjoying building the directory up and watching it transform and grow, I'm new to the directory marketing scene so it has been an interesting experience so far and just gets better each day.

I actually made a DIR while working tech support in 1996. Never launched it eve though I worked on it for 1 full summer. Also made a few other sites that year. What if what if.

This time around Money and Boredom. I'm on the net all the time and I've done this and that but I want something I can potentially earn a passive income from that is PURE EC as my life goal is not to go to work 9-5 but live somewhere tropical where the cost of living / pace is slow and low but you can relax and enjoy your money and the internet is always there.

Having a General Directory is cool because in THEORY you have the largest potential client base. ANYONE.

That being said you have the most competitors... Niche directories are cool but I'm not sure how you start building backlinks for them as I'm sure it's alot harder to populate. Also the # of people search for it is less then a general yet more targeted. Oh the dillema. Basically I always have a lot of projects on the go. I"ve met some cool people in this business though so I'm going to stick around as I've already made some $ investments and time and networking.

Ultimate goal is to make my Dir Dir very very popular and have a feature in each section from a niche directory of my own.

I do think if this group on this message board built a link ring it could really help everyone. Just involves trust as you link to someone and someone different links to you.

I started my first one, an art only directory, just because I'd never done anything like it, I didn't even offer a paid submission option. I also wanted the challenge of writing my own directory script.

The second, a general, directory was started as a place to put all the non-art site submissions I was getting.

It was quite a while after it started that I added the paid option and that was only done to allow people to queue jump the growing mountain of free submissions.

Now nearly 3 years on they are still growing and are both run as businesses.
