Edu. domains are of top reliabilty to SEs - getting links from such domains is next to impossible...

i got a link from a .edu, not sure how it got there but whoever owns the page must have liked my site :), so my guess is write quality pages and then eventually your site will get picked up and linked to.

*.edu sites/links are not good simply because they're from the edu top-level domain. They're good because they are from extremely old, trusted, and well-linked-to sites that happen to be *.edu. Same for *.gov.

The only things that matters in linkbuilding is finding relevant topic backlinks.

For instance: It makes no sense for a educational website to link to a seo firm.

Let's see in real life.. When you open a magazine with your favourite sports car would you be interested in an ad from a computer shop? The answer is no. The same goes for search engines.

I've pointed out this website a few times now, read on.. http://www.jimboykin.com/site-backlinks

Yes but what you forget to mention is that a link from a relevant PAGE (on a university site, for example) - is very valuable.

Imagine instead of a bog standard link, you have an entire page on this site, filled with your keyword (page title and text optimised), as well as in-context links to your site, using your anchor text.

Now that is effective, even if the website hosting the site isn't particularly related to your topic.

And Mr Boykin is an advocate ;)

I have a student page that will never be deleted. I have graduated last year. Our college lets us keep our email and z drive access on their server which includes webspace. My page would look like this http://gac.edu/~student. Should I sell this space for someone to develop, sell links, or is it totally useless?

I think it's unfair that Google cares about .edu and .gov extensions and less so about legitimate universities from non-US countries. For example, in Canada, universities (and pretty much anyone who cares to do so) use the .ca extension. Many Canadian universities are better known than lower-tier US schools. Likewise, many Canadian government agencies use extensions like .bc.ca or .on.ca. We don't have a .gov or .edu equivalent and I've noticed that links from such sites aren't worth as much as those from low-ranking .edu and .gov sites.
