I am about to work on a phrase that has competition of 15 million. My site is not related to the phrase, it as an article and I am going to make that article famous using the phrase. What do you all think should be the strategy to handle this and what are my odds of bringing my article in TOP 10 ?

The odds? pretty slim. Depends on what the phrase is and the competition in the field. For something with that amount of competition your going to need to have an aged domain, authority backlinks and other on topic content.

Id just say goodluck with that. Its about a 1:10000 chance youll get to number one with just a article. And if you do itll be around a year before that is so, and about 10,000 backlinks to your "article"

15M actually may not get your traffic. I was 5th on a 355M+ result and didn't get any traffic from it.

    Hehe......

Well i rank like 6ish on term with Results 1 - 100 of about 54,100,000, is that number greater than 15,100,000?? If so you probably know the answer to your question by now OP.

Another site Results 1 - 100 of about 49,100,000 about 38ish. with no keyword in the domain url or anything.....

Also depends on the players in the competition...

you need some good backlinks from authority site and your phrase should match the exact keyword.

however i still have doubts if you can get ahead of those 15 million pages especially when the phrase is used by sites like cnn, engadget etc..just giving example

You can use Social Bookmarking sites like digg and reddit to fetch more traffic through your articles. The only condition is that the article should be unique and must offer something new which has not been discussed before.

    All the best!

An article is the same as any other target page. Do the onsite and link the crap out of it....

What are U missing? There is no 'special' article method?

*..a phrase that has competition of 15 million..*

Put the phrase in with quotes and you'll get a more accurate picture, if those results are with quotes you've your work cut out..:)

I think you can try for this as there is harm to do it and you will get a good knowledge from it for sure...the main thing is to get visitors so keep that in mind and go further....

    Keep it up...

Raw serps count is one of the poorer indicators of a phrases competition. Unfortunately, the tool I was about to recommend (at SEOMoz) is now only available to paid members.

Ok, try comparing these metrics (do the searches in brackets):
    [keyphrase]
    ["keyphrase"]
    [allinanchor:keyphrase]
    [allinanchor:"keyphrase"]
    [inurl:"keyphrase"]

If appropriate check for both plural and singular versions. Then check those numbers against some other known difficulty phrases for comparison:
    [ipod] (high difficulty)
    [britney spears] (medium-high)
[search engine optimization] (medium, most people aim for the abbr. version)
    [high school chemistry] (low competition)

    See if that helps you.
