yes, that is normal and classic way. but to submit take long time and you need to write many good article and more importantly to submit to directory don't produce much pr to your site.

i am sorry to point out this ...... but with your permission i would like to say that submitting to search engines is really time waste..... Reason goes this way ..... think that you have built a site today and gt it indexed(say .....google) by submitting to directory or what ever .... as we assumed that your site is indexed by google ...by default many search engines which take results from google also indexes your site .. this way your site gets indexed in many search engines..if not all. Now comming to your point : you suggested that submitted to many search engines is good .... bt i say NO ......and here is my explanation: all the search engines cross checks the web sites or web pages with the existing data base and if they find that the site has already been indexed then they simply bypass it. hence its of no use bt mere time waste ... any suggestions are most welcome ...as this explanation what ever i had given is out of my personal exp.
I guess if it's about 'optimisation' then submitting it to the SEs don't do any harm but IMHO the real meat of SEO lies in building a good structurally solid site (eg. not SWFs and images only) that has new content regularly that people find useful/interesting and makes it easy to link back to and for search engines to crawl.
