Are LINK directories still worth doing?

If not, what kind of tweaks do you think are needed to make this promo model "more viable"?

Directories are still viable and thriving if quality and integrity is maintained :)

Mind posting the url of a QUALITY and HIGH INTEGRITY link directory? Would Web 2.0 link directories fare better (seo-wise)?

Yes they have, I sign up for a directory and next thing I know, I'm getting a letter from them every other day wanting me to advertise some more in the directory with featured links and stuff. Because of that I've completely quit submitting to dirs. I probably get 100 spam (yes I feel they are spam cause they never say anywhere that I'm being added to a mailing list) a day.

anyone ever thought of doing some kind of project to find out what dirs spam and what dont?

all you would really have to do is create a mail forwarder in cpanel and then when submitting use email addresses like ,

i get alot of spam to my directory submission email adresses

I've noticed that since Day 1. But no--I wouldn't wanna do that. I do a lot of directory submissions for clients so I have them setup mail accounts they wouldn't mind getting spam on. Sure enough...just as night follows day... spam arrives by the bucketload. Just part of the game, I guess. Too bad link lists have to stoop to that level. Oh well.

There are also a lot of directories that were set up for link farming . I'm certainly still doing directory submissions, but I've also changed how I approach it

To be true, I found that pages with high OBL (out bound links) are not very useful for linkbuilind nowadays.

Effective for traffic, but not really for search engine rankings.
