Domain Selection, which is better

Hey, im currently working on a website, and have to get a domain name for it. For this example, lets just say my website name is 'myname'. If myname.com is taken, which of the following(or feel free to suggest your own) would be a better name to register:

    my-name.com
    OR
    myname.net

(my domain name does consist of two words, so using the hyphen to seperate them wouldnt cause any confusion, im just not sure which would be better for SEO)

    Thanks,
    Matthew

As a user the second one is easier to remember if I refer your site to someone.

I think myname.net will be a better choice than my-name.com (in terms of SEO as well, if I am not wrong:))

You might be better off coming up with something entirely different, unless of course the website is named after your official company name, and you have it trademarked. Otherwise you might risk trademark infringement yourself, or possible confusion with the other websites.

The trouble with hyphenated domains, or .net instead of .com, is that you will end up advertising on behalf of the other site, much of the time. People will miss the hyphen out, or go automatically to the .com. So a lot of the branding you do, especially offline, will be wasted.

see if your is a commercial site then you have to go for ".com" whether it is with "-" or "123" that will help you in your SERP`s and if it your personal then go with " .net" final point is both are good but the fact is which one you opt for and which one will you stick for your SERP`s and b4 you take a domain first chek in google and see whether your able to see any .net in gogle listing if you are then go for it or else go for only .com

    bye.........

hope i have given you the help which your looking for

it really depends how you are planning to advertise. if you want people to remember you by name, then you might just need something entirely different.

in another case, why not get both? both of your domain choices are second type preferences anyway.

myname.net is the better option. It will help in branding the site.

Do some research on who owns the myname.com and make sure there is no trademark. I agree with Obelia about offline promotion of a .net or hyphenated domain - you will loose alot of visitors to the .com.

I think myname.net is much better. Hyphenated sites seem to be indicators of spam sites.

I would probably go with the dot com domain name as there are many sites on the net with the hyphen and it’s not a big problem to type or tell anyone verbally and after all it’s a dot com.

If you like the .net then i think the above advice of investing in the .com is a good one and you should consider it.
